Bummer, Heidi’s is Closing

Last night Sean and Dani told us some really sad news. The store I grew up with is closing their doors for good. Heidi’s European Deli can no longer sustain staying in business due to a lack of customers. They tried less hours and other methods but can no longer keep the doors open.

This is so sad for me because this is where we got all of our German food since moving here to the U.S. in the mid-seventies. We’ve been going there since and to see them close is tough. Heck, Heide’s was my first real job, too. After I quit my paper route of four years (I was the youngest paper boy the Mercury News ever hired), I got a job when Gerhard hired me. It was awesome to work there and it was a great experience for me and prepared me for my job at Erik’s Delicafe two years later.

So, it’s sentimental place for me, too. Not just because it was the only place we could get our beloved German deli meats and food, but because it has so many memories there. I’m totally bummed and have to get pictures of the place before they close it for good. I need something to show my kids where their daddy “grew up” in. :)

Now, where am I going to find German meats? Anyone in the Central Valley know a good place for Leberkäse?
