Liz’s PC and One Duuuuuuusty One!

I stayed up late, again, working on Liz’s computer (yes, late nights with computers are starting to become common :) ) and pretty much got it all finished at about 1:35 a.m.. Tom scored us a 700MHz Dell Dimension for $100! Her old computer was 250MHz, so she’s blazing’ now! hehehehe.

I discovered Saturday that the computer I ordered for our server came with Windows XP Professional on it. Well, I smacked Win2k Server on it the minute I got it (never even booted into Dell’s install) and figured that I could install that license on Liz’s new computer, so I did. :) It was the Dell image disc and I didn’t know if it’d work, but I tried. Sure enough, the common XP install window came up and I was happy. The only difference I saw was a command window pop open and perform a script toward the end. I figure it was the Dell specific stuff at the time.

The only problem I had was when I went to authorize the computer after install. It told me that that I had an unauthorized copy and to try another code. It never asked me for a code during install like other installs, so I figured this was a MSDN type install where the code is imbedded into the install application. I entered the code from the side of the server and sure enough, it took it. So, I must have had the disc for my laptop. :) No biggy, got the right code in and it’s all legal.

Liz is now running on a faster processor on a better OS with the newest Office (newer then mine!). So, she’s looking pretty good now.

So that left her old PC for the garage. It was pretty dusty last night and I figured I’d clean it before moving it to the garage. When I opened it up, I was stunned. Dust balls every where! I took it out to the back and sprayed it nuts with my compressed air can. Dude, there must have been like four handfuls of dust balls! It was all over the place. I couldn’t believe it. That totally could have started a fire, man.

So now it’s clean and waiting to be hooked up in the garage. I will now take Liz’s new computer and dust it out every once in a while. Not save to have all that dust in it.

Today Katelyn and I will go get some KVM cables to get Sissy up and running on mommy’s monitor. She’s really excited. :)

I’ve been using OpenOffice on the new laptop for the past 2 months or so. Got to say that I am very impressed. It does a great job of loading MSOffice docs and is only really lacking VBA compaitibility for documnet automation…but hey as a home user who needs that anyway
