Tonight we went to San Jose to take Uncle Jan out to dinner. Since he lives down the street from our old apartment, we took him to our favorite pizza joint in the world, Hive Five Pizza Co.
But before doing so, we drove into our old apartment complex, The Woods, to show him and the kids where Liz and I first lived as a married couple (well, as a couple, period.
) As we drove into the complex, new to us was the gated community aspect. There was also a real office building and no longer a mobile home trailer. As we drove toward our building, I told Liz, “I have that anxious feeling again of, ‘Hope I can find a parking spot!’.” It was always a mad rush to get one in this over crowded complex.
When we pulled up to our building, it was the same…but different. There was satellite dishes on all the balconies! We couldn’t believe it! It was like looking at a picture of the Middle East. Other then the pizza dishes careened ever where, it was as if nothing changed. Same building color, same trees, same grass. Nothing new.
We then drove to the new buildings that they were building when we moved out. They were really nice and looked like homes. They all garages and looked very nice and modern. We talked about how they probably were like $2,500 a month when they were done in the hay day of the boom and now probably are about a K less.
We zipped out of memory lane for another special memory: pizza! We had passed by earlier to scope the parking situation and it was packed then and I was figuring it would be when we returned. But God is so gracious that he provided us the best spot there, right in front of the place!
We all got out and got an outside table. The kids and I ordered and then I brought the drinks out and the kids played outside. Funny how a bicycle rack can be a wonderful toy to an 18 month old and 3 year old.
They played on it until our pizza was delivered.
I took my first bite in sweet anticipation. Mmmmm, it was just as great as I remembered it! The best pizza anywhere. Man it was soooooo tasty. I ate half of the large myself! Ya, I pigged out, but hey, it was worth it. I was reflecting to Liz how it has been over five years since we last ate there. The night before we moved out from the Woods to our current home was the last time we ate at High Five Pizza. I remember telling her that night, “Honey, we’ll probably never have High Five again, we have to have it!” And we did.
I hope it won’t be another five years before eating this pizza again. It’s just too darn good to wait that long again.

I guess I should not complain when I drive 15 minutes to get to High 5. You have to drive about a 90 minutes.

Best pizza anywhere? Um, Gino’s East, Chicago. Everyone knows Chicago style pizza is the best, and Gino’s East is the best of the best! Order the sausage. You get one piece of sausage on your pizza. If your pizza is 14″, your sausage is 14″! That’s how pizza is done!
Mmmm, I’m hungry now!!

Wow, Gino’s does sound good. The Chi-town pizza’s I’ve had out here honestly haven’t impressed me, so maybe they weren’t done right.
Ya Brian, stop complaining!

yeah, I’ve had Chi-style pizza in St. Louis that was pretty terrible. I think it’s definitely best in Chi-town. Other recommendations are Lou Malnotti’s, Giordano’s (which is now a chain and we’ve got one in town!), and Home Run Inn. Gino’s moved a few years ago (used to be half a block off Michigan Ave.). There were dozens of years of graffitti gone with the rubble. The newer place is making up for it quickly though. They’ve also put at least one out in the suburbs, but the atmosphere just isn’t quite the same.

Sounds like you do have good pie. Well, if I’m ever in Chi-town, I definitely will be going to a pizza joint there. Now I have a good list of pizza joints.

Thanks for the inspiration. Took carry out from our local Giordano’s tonight. Mmmmm…tasteee. My wife was glad I had my craving satisfied. Stuffed in three pieces, double what anyone else did…now I’m afraid to see a scale.

Stuffed at three pieces?!
Well, glad I could have been of inspiration.
