iTunes on Your PocketPC?

Looks like I’m not the only one that loves iTunes and has a PocketPC with Wi-Fi. What two perfect pieces to stream your music from your iTunes player, right? Well AspectoSoftware has developed WiFiTunes and while only in alpha, it already looks very promising. The PocketPC application will sniff your local network via Rendezvous and find any instance of iTunes running on either your Mac or PC and let you browse it’s library or playlists and stream the MP3’s right to your PDA! The interface is quite similiar to the Browse view in iTunes and thus keeps a low learning curve. WiFiTunes uses the fmodce library for it’s file format support and thus AAC files currently are not supported. AspectoSoftware is hoping future vesions of fmodce will have this support and has even inquired with the authors directly. So if your library contains any such encoded songs, they will not appear in the current version of WiFiTunes as not to tease you of what you can not hear. :) Even with AAC support, though, iTMS DRM protected songs will most likely not be supported in future releases. But hey, that’s what JHymn is for, right? :)

I do not understand the love affair that people have with iTunes. I just tried downloading my first cd (i received a gift card for my b-day) . It will not let me burn a CD saying the songs are not authorized on this machine? What does that mean? I can not listen to songs that I download on musicmatch? I can not use ephPod to put them on my iPod? Would I buy a car (say Frod) that I could only drive on 101 at certain speeds and only to authorized Ford approved drive-thru’s (Carl’s and BK, but no In-n-Out or Del)?

I do not get it, I thought the music I bought was mine, guess it is not really mine. Apple still controls it.

Sorry I guess I am off topic, now I am stepping off my soap box.

Aaah yes, you’ve been bit by the DRM bug my friend! The evils of the RIAA. You can blame them, not Apple. If you buy music from Napster, Real, or MusicMatch, you’ll discover similar problems (like none of them but Real will work on your iPod and then Real’s will screw up your iTMS songs.) It’s a sad, sad, thing DRM.

Always buy and download your music from iTMS into the iTunes you will sync from. ephPod will not be able to sync DRM protected songs, so don’t bother using that. Get in the habit of using iTunes. To authorize other computers, simply network it to the computer that has the iTMS songs that you downloaded and play it in iTunes. It will then pop open a login prompt for authorization. After you successfully do that, then you can burn from it. If you are at your limit (five PC’s), then simply send e-mail (via the Help in iTunes) to de-authorize ALL of your computers and then authorize the ones you want one-by-one. Apple moans and groans when you do this, but they’ll still do it for you. My response to their complaints: give us an interface via iTunes to do it ourselves and we’ll leave you alone! :)

i am deciding it is not really worth all the work. You said to authorize other computers. I can not even burn a CD from the computer I download to.

I feel like I want what I pay for. The only reason I bought this particular CD was because it is an import and $20 used anywhere on amazon, plus I have the certificate.

Thanks for your help though. Apple makes a nice MP3 player. But getting downloaded music on it does not seem like an easy thing. I could autosync, but a pop-up window says it will replace everything I already have on my iPod. I am not looking to lose 30gb of music or spend all that time resyncing. All my playlists are done with MusicMatch.

I have never had an issue with downloading music from iTMS. I suspect your use of MusicMatch may be the issue. I would investigate via Apple Help to what’s going on with your inability to burn.

iTunes just wants to sync to your iPod because it never has before and it leaves marks on your iPod to do so. Yes, it thinks it’s a new sync, so all will be copied over. I’d suggest getting iPodBackup and using that then syncing. If it looks wrong, then restore it and you’ll be back where you were. If it works, then you’ll be one-step ahead! :)

Hey, maybe I can log into your PC next week and help you. Let me know and we can set something up.

Well the only reason I use MusicMatch is to rip my CD’s and create playlists. I guess I am just a loyalist. I had ME on my laptop 2 years ago when I received my 1st iPod (20g 2nd gen) I tunes would not run on ME. Heck I think I might have even given you a few Pepsi lids from last year.

I am not realy having an issue of downloading, it was just after I downloaded it, I still was not authorized to make a CD on the computer it was downoaled to.

I am not all that bothered by it anymore, but thanks for the offer of help. Have a great weekend.
