Okay, I took the plunge and went with VoIP yesterday. After sitting on the fence deciding if I should go with Vonage or Packet8, I finally went with Vonage. A few reasons I did, since I was heavy on Packet8, are as follows. One, Vonage no longer locks out IP Phones. So now I can get any phone I want. Two, they now have Caller ID with Name (which they didn’t to recently.) Three, a free second line for faxing. Fourth, SimulRing. This is a feature that will ring all user specified numbers at the same time until one of those numbers picks up. Now I’ll be able to pick up calls on either my cell, home, or my answering service will be able to get it. No more waiting for the rule to trip over onto the next number and give the caller long pick-up times. Niiice.
I’m going to go with it for the free month before porting over my toll free number to make sure this will work out. If it does, I’ll be very happy to dump my long distance and collect the savings. The last phase of going fully broadband will be when Vonage gets a call center in the 209 area code. Then I can port my local business and home number over and it’ll be goodbye POPS! I can’t wait!!

Vonage phones themselves I believe are locked to the Vonage network; however, any unlocked IP Phones will work on Vonage’s network. That’s what I was told. I’ll find out next week when I plug in either a 3Com or a Cicsco I get.

All right, but what does this mean ? If you’ve bought a Vonage you’ve got married with it. You can no longer change providers. And divorde is painfull !!
