Vonage Update

Well it seems my outgoing data would clip as my MTA was too far removed from the cable modem. So I yanked it out and put it right behind the Linksys router and adjusted the QoA for SIP and that didn’t seem to help too much. Ugh, that meant moving a lot of cabling since I didn’t want to move the MTA too far from my analog phone. That done, I seemed to have worked out the clipping problem callers would experience on their end, but some long distance calls now give a FM-like static to the caller. A call to Arizona said it was “perfect” while a call to my mother in San Jose got me the FM static rating. Texas didn’t answer and Monterey said it was “fine”. I guess I have a couple of weeks to put this through some true testing, but I’m not hip on the static and clipping thing. I am glad that clipping is gone but I do wish I could have kept it behind my router instead of in front of it. That way when I head out on vacation, I don’t have to hassle with reseting the cable modem and the router. Oh well, small price to pay for cheap phone use. :)

So, I’ll keep you posted and if any of you have experience with Vonage and MTA’s, let me know your thoughts and tricks. I’m thinking that maybe the Motorola MTA isn’t the best to go with and maybe I should get another brand. Of course that leads to a problem if I bail and it’s an all-in-one solution as my network will then fall apart when I remove it for my trip. :)
