Mighty Mouse to Get Mightier

So I’ve been using the Mighty Mouse since the day it came out and I have only one major compliant. The cord. When you have a cordless keyboard and you can move about the room freely, it kinda sucks to have a mouse that’s not so mighty after all. In fact, didn’t the original Mighty Mouse fly? Mmm.

Well I’m here on record to say one of the “yawners” at Macworld will be the release of the Might Mouse Cordless. It’ll use the wonderful protocol of Bluetooth and bond with the Mac mini I type on now without any problem. Yes, it’s going to be just something that kinda shows up and probably won’t get much mention since the iTablet, Intel PowerBook, and 6GB iPod nano will all be stealing the show. But that’s okay, because I’ll be in line at the Apple Store on Market Street before it even opens waiting in line to get my mouse worthy of its name. That’ll be mighty fine indeed.

The best feature of the mighty mouse is the scroll ball. I sure hope they replace the track pad on their notebooks with this great little ball. I disagree that the cord is the worst feature. In my opinion its the placement and sensitvity of the side buttons. The side bottons are to far forward, forcing a person to arch the middle finger back, to use the scroll ball. Sometimes the side buttons have to be pressed several times to to get them to respond. They need to much pressure to activate. A very uncomforatable situation after even a few minutes of web surfing, but I sure love that scroll ball. I have gone back to using my logitech 4 button mouse. I have returned the mighty mouse. A real shame I sure loved that scroll ball.

I agree, the scroll ball is an excellent spin on the “wheel” (pun intended.) Yes, you’re right, the side buttons are too sensitive. I always invoke Expose at the wrong time and it’s a bit annoying. The buttons, though, have never really been an issue for me. I know many complain about them, but I guess I’m different then the rest as they seem alright by me.

I’ve always been and will always be a single button man. The way my hand naturally uses a mouse, my “mouse finger” falls in between two buttons. I’m much older these days and my joints hurt more and more on their own. Using a two button mouse only exacerbates the problem. Although I have always liked the scroll wheel on such mice. So the scroll ball intrigues me. Nay, lures me!

What irks me is that Apple stopped selling the single button mouse. Right when my 3 year old mouse died. Thanks goodness for ebay and clearance shelves. I have no need nor desire for a multi-button mouse.

Now cordless is another issue. I have yet to find a cordless mouse light enough to warrant a purchase. I bought my wife the Kensington Studio cordless, two button, scroll pad. She loves it. I hate the weight, the power run for the “base”, and the two buttons. Love the scroll pad and the rechargeability (although the batteries just gave up the ghost after two years. Funny how no one complains about rechargeable batteries other than the iPod’s).

    But that’s just my opinion.
