With all the hubbub in the Mac news media regarding swelling / malfunctioning batteries, this doesn't surprise me. My theory: I'm betting your battery is biting the dust. The behavior you describe is the *exact* behavior my old Powerbook Titanium 800 MHz exhibits when it's original battery's charge suddenly drops to nothing after being spent. Mac OS X gets no warning from the battery, and as a result, gives you no warning.

Go ahead and call AppleCare. Like you, I had a problem with my MacBook Pro shutting off without warning when the battery was still around 40 to 50%. I called AppleCare and the next morning I had a new battery. I did not have to send the laptop in.

Macintouch posted the results of a poll this morning that show that 11% of the people who responded were encountering sudden shutdowns. So this problem seems to be affecting a fairly large number of people.
