I can play Dolby and DTS 5.1 sound files now (Apple TV version 1.1) through my HDTV sound system using the optical sound port. These will sound like static over regular stereo speakers, but hooked up to an AV receiver, it is decoded into 5.1 channels of sound and played back in real 5.1 surround. Check it out.
