East Bay Commute Turns Deadly

July 19 — The morning commute in the East Bay turned deadly Wednesday on westbound 580 to the 680 transition when a chain reaction accident involving a big rig and four cars claimed the life of a pregnant woman.

The big rig slammed into the back of a green Jetta around 4:45 a.m. on the approach to the 580/680 transition.

Authorities have arrested the big rig driver on vehicular manslaughter charges.

The collision involved four vehicles and the truck. In addition to the fatality, four people suffered injuries in the chain reaction accident.

For hours, traffic on westbound 580 was backed up to the Altamont pass.

Traffic was still crawling three hours later as the CHP, Caltrans crews and tow trucks cleared the area to tow away the demolished Jetta.
