DeLorme and SPOT

The groundbreaking new DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator will receive a prestigious 2010 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award during a special ceremony Tuesday at the Hearst Publishing corporate headquarters in New York City.

Combining global positioning and satellite communications technologies, this unique product pairing comprises the first handheld GPS navigation system capable of keeping users connected with family, friends and, if necessary, emergency coordination services from remote locations around the world.

Popular Mechanics chose 10 products and innovators in science and technology that they believe moved society forward in 2010. In explaining their selection, Popular Mechanics editors described the PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator as “a valuable tool on any trip that extends well outside of cell phone range. It not only provides detailed topographical maps and GPS guidance in the backcountry, it also lets explorers send SOS messages with embedded coordinates via satellite if they’re in trouble — or Facebook updates if they’re not.”

A special interface on the PN-60w connects it wirelessly with the SPOT Satellite Communicator (engineered to work exclusively with the PN-60w). Custom Type & Send text messages are created on the PN-60w’s internal keyboard, and sent via the SPOT Satellite Communicator to email addresses, cell phones, and or the user’s Facebook and Twitter pages. In addition, family and friends can track the user’s progress via Google online maps.

“This has been an ambitious project requiring a great deal of engineering expertise from both DeLorme and Spot LLC,” said Caleb Mason, DeLorme Vice President. “The end result is a new way for those who venture into the wilderness around the globe to navigate their adventures and also stay in touch with those they’re close with.”

Katie Schoeben, Global Marketing Director for Spot LLC said “It’s an honor to be recognized as innovators in technology by such a prestigious magazine as Popular Mechanics. We are proud to partner with DeLorme on the PN-60w and SPOT Satellite Communicator providing consumers handheld GPS technology with satellite messaging capabilities for the very first time.”

The other companies being recognized with Innovation Awards are Bosch, Chevrolet, GoPoint Technologies, Nissan, Qualcomm, Sony, Sprint, Stihl, and Trane. The Award winners will be highlighted in the November issue of Popular Mechanics, on newsstands Oct. 12, with winner profiles currently online at www.popularmechanics.com/breakthrough10.

The Earthmate PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator is now widely available for purchase at retail stores and online, from major sporting goods and electronics resellers. SPOT communication and tracking services are activated via low-cost subscriptions at www.findmeSPOT.com

Verizon Droid X Buyer

College student Katie Masucci lined up at her local Verizon store in Frisco, Texas at 9:45 pm last night to wait a couple of hours for the doors to open and be the first to purchase the Motorola Droid X. It is reported that hundreds of people lined up across the nation to await the opening of stores to be the first to nab Motorola’s new Android 2.1-based phone, the Droid X. Many stores participated in a mid-night sale getting the new smartphone in customers hands even earlier. While not the over-night lines of past iPhone sales, this is one of the first such lining up for a competing phone to Apple’s phone that reset the standards.

Motorola brings, “An HD camcorder, 8 megapixel camera, 3G Mobile HotSpot capabilities, and enterprise features and outstanding call quality. DROID X also comes with loads of memory – 8 gigabyte (GB) onboard and a 16GB memory card. For customers seeking the ultimate in storage, the new 32GB SanDisk® microSDHC™ card allows customers to expand DROID X’s memory to 40GB. Verizon Wireless is the only retailer that offers customers the 32GB SanDisk microSDHC card,” according to Verizon’s press release. The large 4.3-inch high-resolution screen is outstanding – we have been playing with the Droid X for a week – and allows for 720p video via it’s HDMI port on the bottom left side. Also new to the experience is streaming movies from BlockBuster On Demand, ala Netflix for the iPhone, presented by V Cast Video.

The Motorola Droid X is available online and in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores tomorrow for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement. Per Verizon, “Customers will receive the mail-in rebate in the form of a debit card; upon receipt, customers may use the card as cash anywhere debit cards are accepted. DROID X customers will need to subscribe to a Verizon Wireless Nationwide Talk plan (beginning at $39.99 monthly access) and an Email and Web for Smartphone plan (beginning at $29.99 for unlimited monthly access). Customers can add the optional 3G Mobile HotSpot service to their DROID X smartphones for $20 per month. The 32GB SanDisk microSDHC card is available tomorrow for $99.99 when purchased along with the new DROID X or for $149.99 when purchased separately. In addition, current Verizon Wireless customers who have contracts ending by Dec. 31, 2010, can upgrade to DROID X without penalty.”

Look for our review on the Droid X in the coming weeks but as a teaser, we’ll just say this much: you don’t need to wait for the rumored Verizon iPhone.

NAVIGON AG, a leading provider of mobile phone on-board navigation, today announced a significant update for MobileNavigator, the most feature-rich navigation app available on the iPhone platform. In addition to the iOS 4 integration, update 1.6.0 delivers the following new features: Live Weather, Clever Parking, updated NAVTEQ maps, Destination Information Display, Pedestrian Mode Voice Guidance and Enhanced Reality View™ Pro. The new release also brings NAVIGON MyRegion, the regional version of MobileNavigator, to the same feature level as MobileNavigator North America. Available now in iTunes, NAVIGON offers a special update 1.6.0 launch promotion for the first 12 days from launch date: MobileNavigator for $49.99, regular $79.99.

“MobileNavigator 1.6.0 delivers an efficient and informative navigation experience, helping drivers arrive stress-free and on time,” said Gerhard Mayr, vice-president worldwide mobile phones & new markets, NAVIGON. “Today MobileNavigator is the most feature-rich iPhone navigation app available. In the latest update, we not only added new driving related features such as Weather Live and Clever Parking but also improved the way information is presented in our new Destination Information Display.”

Live Weather updates and reports current weather conditions along the route and at the destination in real-time. Ensuring no unpleasant surprises, temperature and weather condition icons appear in the route overview screen before and during navigation. With only a tap a detailed three-day forecast is available. NAVIGON MobileNavigator is the first iPhone navigation app to include a Clever Parking feature, giving drivers the advantage of knowing where and what the best parking options are available around the upcoming location. When approaching the destination, a “P” icon appears in the map view. In one tap an easy to scroll list of all available parking options are available, including distance from location for easy decision-making. The Destination Information Display provides an at-a-glance overview and summary of information pertaining to the destination. Users can customize what is shown in settings/options, such as parking locations, weather information and specific POI’s such as all the restaurants at around the upcoming destination. This delivers an overview of everything important ahead of time, so they know what to expect and where to go when arriving.

Compatible with iOS 4, update 1.6.0 includes the much anticipated multitasking* compatibility, which provides continuous navigation and turn-by-turn directions while running other applications simultaneously. Users can, take a call without sacrificing navigation. While on the go, and receiving a call, the voice guided turn-by-turn directions automatically turn down, heard only by the driver and one tap lets the screen continue routing and navigation information in the map mode. MobileNavigator runs in the background when accessing other apps and functionalities of the iPhone, so the app can continue to automatically calculate and update routing information and provide voice guided turn-by-turn directions. When switching back to MobileNavigator, the user picks up exactly the place where left. The update also includes enhanced Retina display buttons and icons for the iPhone 4.

For those who use MobileNavigator when not behind the wheel, Pedestrian Mode Voice Guidance delivers voice directions as well as voiceover menu guidance. In pedestrian mode users get the same “turn-by-turn” directions as if they were behind the wheel, and can set the voice support to handle navigating within the applications menu options for a more hands free experience. Reality View 3D has also been enhanced, with a new look. Updated and refined graphics make the views of the road even more at-a glance friendly.

Version 1.6.0 Feature Highlights:
Live Weather
Clever Parking
Destination Information Display
iOS 4 integration
Enhanced Retina display buttons and icons for the iPhone 4
Latest NAVTEQ Maps
Pedestrian Mode Voice Guidance
Enhanced Reality View™ Pro and display of street names in the map view

*Note: NAVIGON MyRegion, the regional version of NAVIGON’s iPhone navigation app, has been renamed to MobileNavigator US MyRegion East, Central and West. This takes into account the fact that NAVIGON has updated the MyRegion app to the exact same feature set as MobileNavigator North America, including the In App Purchase Panorama View 3D. The regional version will receive the same updates as MobileNavigator North America in the future; the only difference is the price and the map coverage. NAVIGON MobileNavigator US MyRegion can easily be upgraded to additional regions or a full US map on the go via In App Purchase.

Pricing and Availability:
MobileNavigator is available for $79.99 in the Apple App Store and is equipped with maps of North America from NAVTEQ®. REVIEW: CoPilot Live North America

CoPilot has been around for years and it’s version 8 number boldly indicates this. I still remember the first version it released for laptops almost a decade ago and now, it’s been shrunk down to the little iPhone screen. CoPilot Live handles the reduced screen real estate quite well placing important information in clear and easy to read parts of the screen while never cluttering it up. Of all the navigation applications I have reviewed, iPhone or stand-alone, I would say CoPilots map interface is the best. But does it get you to your destination the best?
