SANTA CLARA, Calif., December 14, 2011— As global LCD TV brands ramp up production for the Q4’11 holiday period, LCD TV production is nearing a record high. Of the TV brands surveyed by NPD DisplaySearch for its MarketWise – LCD Industry Dynamics report, production reached a record high of 19.8 million units in October, and is expected to maintain that level in November.
Even though production for most global TV brands typically slows down in November, LCD TV production is expected to be sustained as Chinese TV brands, aiming for monthly shipment growth in November and December, prepare for the Chinese New Year holiday. November is estimated to be the highest record with 19.9M units built by the surveyed brands globally. “In addition to supply chain pull-in for upcoming holidays, we expect Chinese TV brands to fight for market share to make up for shipment targets missed in the beginning of the year,” said Deborah Yang, Research Director for NPD DisplaySearch.
TV demand outlook is turning positive for unit volume in the near term, but the focus is on inexpensive and simple-feature sets. TV brands, including leading global vendors, are planning to carry new TV sizes and low-specification LCD TVs to create business opportunities and drive traffic in 2012. Yang added, “Prices for Black Friday may not influence the market very much, but the price points of new emerging sizes together with simple-feature TV sets cannot be overlooked. These are likely to lead to confusion in the product and value proposition.”
Despite strong sell-through results in North America and China, LCD TV brands are cautiously controlling their inventories. For December through February, LCD TV brands are planning to reduce production to prevent overstocking for the slow season in Q1’12. Global LCD TV production plans of surveyed LCD TV brands will fall to 13.4M in January. LCD TV panel suppliers will need to continuously control their capacity utilization in the coming months, even as panel prices stabilize.
Shortages of hard disk drives (HDDs) caused by the flooding in Thailand are expected to last until Q1’12, impacting production of notebook PCs and LCD monitors. In particular, NPD DisplaySearch foresees mobile PC brands cutting low-margin mobile PC production (netbook PCs or 15.6” mainstream models). “From the beginning of Q2’12, there is a possibility that mobile PC production volumes could increase significantly as a result of channel refilling and new 2012 model launches,” added Yang.
Monitor brands that have high attach rates to desktop PCs or have higher presence in the China market are being impacted strongly by the HDD shortage and the slowing demand outlook, while stand-alone monitor brands are less affected. However, in the China DIY (PCs built by consumers) market, demand is weakening due to increases in HDD prices.
In addition to LCD TVs, the NPD DisplaySearch MarketWise – LCD Industry Dynamics report tracks mobile PC and desktop monitor applications for large-area TFT LCD panels. The report delivers concise, relevant information for decision-makers who need to quickly understand the entire large-area TFT LCD supply chain. Presented in a dashboard format, the report highlights the status of every aspect of the supply chain, from components to the end-market, covering the ever-changing dynamics of panels, brands, capacity, production, prices and more.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., November 15, 2011—Shipments of large-area TFT LCD panels were 185.5 million in Q3’11, unchanged from Q2’11, but up 12% Y/Y. Revenues reached $19.2 billion, down 2% Q/Q and 11% Y/Y. According to the DisplaySearch Quarterly Large-Area TFT LCD Shipment Report, panel makers are targeting a very modest 2% growth in shipments for Q4’11, as downstream manufacturers and brands are expected to prepare for the holiday season. Revenues are not expected to grow, however, because panel prices are still not showing signs of a rebound.
The TFT LCD industry has been in over-supply for six quarters in a row, and while panel prices rebounded slightly in Q2’11, it was only short term,” noted David Hsieh, Vice President, Greater China Market, DisplaySearch. “Q3’11 panel shipment growth has been hampered by stagnant economic conditions, especially for IT products and TVs. Panel makers did not achieve their goal of growing Q3’11 shipments 7% Q/Q, and slow demand has been eroding panel prices in Q3’11.”
According to DisplaySearch estimates based on panel makers’ shipment targets in Q4’11, 209 million LCD TV panels will be shipped in 2011, 5% less than the 220.8 million shipped during 2010. This would make 2011 the first year that LCD TV panel shipments decreased.
In Q3’11, only notebook and tablet PCs panel shipments increased Q/Q. As in Q2’11, tablet PC demand showed the strongest momentum, up 21% Q/Q and 246% Y/Y, while notebook PC panel shipments grew by 4% and 22%, respectively. Monitor panel shipments fell by 5% Q/Q, LCD TV panel shipments were nearly flat, and mini-note panel shipments fell 30% Q/Q.
With the exception of notebook and tablet PC panels, revenues were down Q/Q for all applications due to panel price declines. Monitor, mini-note PC, and LCD TV panel revenues fell by 5%, 34%, and 2%, respectively. For mainstream LCD panels, prices have approached cash costs of the panel makers.
The DisplaySearch Quarterly Large-Area TFT LCD Shipment Report covers the entire range of large-area panels shipped worldwide and regionally. The report analyzes historical shipments and forecast projections with 100% coverage of panel makers. Authored by industry experts, the Quarterly Large-Area TFT LCD Shipment Report provides some of the industry’s most detailed information and insights. It is delivered in PowerPoint and includes Excel-based data and tables. Every time I see a patrol car roll by, I look into its windows wondering what the heck it uses for a laptop. If you’re like me, then you may wish to read beyond the jump to get a better idea. Raytheon, known for it’s military rockets, missiles, and other objects of destruction, is the one behind the magic for LA’s Sheriff’s Department. Starting today, the LASD gets new MDCSes (mobile data computer systems) in their cars, trucks, and even motorcycles. While the press release gives no specifications on the system, it does state that officers will be able to, “access a variety of law enforcement information including fingerprint databases, Global Positioning System (GPS) expedited routing to emergency calls, and other critical resources peace officers need to efficiently serve the public.” The near $20 million – ya, million! – investment replaces equipment from 1987. Ya, 1987!! Crazy, huh?
Raytheon Partners With Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department to Raise Public Safety In Nation’s Most Populous County
New laptop computer systems will increase efficiency of deputies, deliver information faster to patrol cars
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 2, 2011 — Raytheon Company (NYSE:RTN) announced today that Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) vehicles equipped with new mobile data computer systems (MDCS) are now rolling out on the streets, protecting residents. LASD patrol cars, motorcycles, prisoner transport vehicles and SUVs outfitted with the Raytheon-integrated computer systems were being unveiled today at a news briefing in Los Angeles.
The computer systems will enhance the access of more than 2,400 field units to new public safety technologies. Deputies will now be able to utilize the Sheriff’s Data Network, Intranet and other criminal databases from their vehicles with the state-of-the-art mobile data computers. They can also access a variety of law enforcement information including fingerprint databases, Global Positioning System (GPS) expedited routing to emergency calls, and other critical resources peace officers need to efficiently serve the public.
Sheriff Lee Baca, whose agency is the largest sheriff’s department in the nation with a county population of more than 10 million, said, “Raytheon worked closely with our sheriff’s deputies, engineers and technicians to integrate the latest public safety technologies and capabilities into our vehicles. This new mobile data computer system will greatly increase the efficiency of deputies in the field, providing them more knowledge at their fingertips, and enabling them to do more for the public now and in the years ahead.”
Daniel J. Crowley, president of Raytheon Network Centric Systems, said, “Linking the complex hardware and software in the vehicles required a skilled systems integrator like Raytheon. That expertise is what makes our company a leader in the public safety market. As a significant employer in Los Angeles County, Raytheon has a vested interest in improving public safety for the county.”
The LASD will have the added benefit of using Raytheon’s new Public Safety Regional Technology Center, opening in Downey this winter, to maximize the capabilities of the system as new technologies become available. This is in addition to Raytheon’s laying the foundation for the new UCLA Center for Public Safety Network Systems that will create a collaborative research forum that brings together academia, industry and public safety agencies.
The $19.9 million investment with Raytheon by the LASD and the County of Los Angeles will dramatically upgrade the 1987 mobile digital technology currently in use and is important to the future of public safety for the millions of people living in the greater Los Angeles area.
Visit Raytheon’s multimedia Web feature (http://www.raytheon.com/newsroom/feature/rtn11_lsa/index.html) for photographs and videos showing the new mobile data computer systems in use.

Orb Audio Launches Booster, the World’s Smallest Integrated Amplifier with Four Inputs, Remote Control and Subwoofer Output
New Product Complements Line of Orb Compact Speakers and Amplifiers
NEW YORK, NEW YORK (October 31, 2011) –– Orb Audio, a leading maker of handmade, highly affordable and décor-friendly audio products, announced today the launch of Booster, one of the world’s smallest integrated amplifiers. Together with Orb’s compact Mod1 and Mod2 speakers, Booster allows consumers to say goodbye to large, complicated home audio receivers without sacrificing sound quality or convenience.
Booster brings high performance sound to up to four audio sources, featuring an easy-to-use remote control, beautiful extruded aluminum cabinet and professional quality speaker connectors. Additionally, Booster is designed with a subwoofer output and small/large speaker size selector, features not normally found on amplifiers of this size.
Booster is also very small, measuring just six inches wide, six inches deep and one and three quarters inches high. When paired with Orb’s award-winning compact speakers, Booster delivers luxurious, room-filling sound from an unbelievably small package.
“Booster is a great addition to our product line because it is a problem solver,” said Ethan Siegel, co-founder and CEO of Orb Audio. “Our customers have asked us for an easy way to bring home speaker sound to their computers, iPods and TVs without complicated electronics or extensive wiring. Now we have two great solutions to offer consumers — Mini-T, released earlier this year, which connects one audio source to a pair of speakers, and Booster, which connects up to four sources and also features a subwoofer output and remote control. Between these two choices, we have the bases covered, and consumers can choose the features they need.”
“We also hope to expand the market for small home audio components,” said Siegel. “Booster is the only amplifier of this size that features multiple inputs, a remote control and a subwoofer output. It really can replace much larger components, and we think this is a winning combination of features, performance, size and price.”
Available immediately for $164.00, Booster can also be purchased as a package with two Orb speakers for $378.00, a savings of $25. For individuals who desire a more traditional audio setup, Orb Audio also offers complete home theater systems to fit most budgets and room sizes. About Orb Audio
Orb Audio is committed to being different. From the beginning in 2002, it has been our intention to deliver speaker systems with the finest quality components, an attractive, upscale design and an affordable price. The only way to accomplish all of this was to be different from the other players in the industry, make our speakers in the United States, and to sell them to our clients directly to avoid substantial (and totally unnecessary) markups. Our satellite speakers are manufactured in the United States by craftspeople with years of experience in electronics assembly. We do not have to take mass market considerations into our design, so we can design our speakers for one thing — performance.

It’s often said that the best security is the most obvious security. Here is such an example of that with the Original V-Neck Sleeves for your Apple MacBooks, iPhones, and iPads. Taking the concept of hiding something of value in something of little value, Computer Apparel created a case that allows you to slip in your device and its accessories in a venue that does not attract attention like the common “Steal me!” computer bags that litter airports, schools, and coffee shops around the nation. Most will glance at a shirt and walk right by it as they near that computer bag in the corner. The V-Neck Sleeve continues to protect your investment from common injuries incurred when, um, naked and shirtless.
My only reservation for the shirt is most people do not travel around with neatly folded shirts; however, if placed in a case or a hotel drawer, yes, this would fool the average thief for sure.
The only thing that could have made this even better is if it were a black mock shirt such as the late Steve Jobs use to wear. But maybe that will appear as a special edition.
LOS ANGELES, CA – October 18, 2011 – Computer Apparel announces the next
generation in business casual with their Original V-Neck Sleeves, designed
to protect Apple laptops, iPhones, and iPads in style. This perfectly
tailored v-neck tee offers Mac enthusiasts a fashion-forward alternative to
the common computer case. Made from high-quality cottons and ultra-soft
padding, the Original V-Neck Sleeve is not only a safe fit for computers and
tablets, but it is also a machine washable one. Equipped with convenient
pockets to stow chargers, papers, and even a place for an iPhone, this is
one computer sleeve that will never go out of style.
“We wanted to create something that was fun, fashionable, and most
importantly, of quality,” says Roger Ein of Computer Apparel. “The V-Neck
Sleeve offers superior protection, convenience, and even security, meaning
it is easy to mistake the V-Neck Sleeve for an actual folded up v-neck
t-shirt.”
However, the playful Original V-Neck Sleeve is not the only top shelf
product to expect from Computer Apparel. The up-and-coming company is
bursting at the seams with new and exciting computer sleeve ideas.
“We have hundreds of ideas for new computer sleeve fashions,” says Ein.
“The Original V-Neck Sleeve is just the beginning. Imagine an entire
wardrobe for your computer; that’s Computer Apparel.”
For now, the off the cuff computer sleeves are just the tech trend to turn
heads. Available in four sizes and five vibrant colors, there is a V-Neck
Sleeve suited for every personality. Whether it is stowed snuggly in a
suitcase or discretely in a drawer, Apple owners can rest assured their
computers are protected and looking good with the Original V-Neck Sleeve
from Computer Apparel.

On the heals of Apple’s record breaking weekend of a reported 4 million iPhone 4Ses sold, Verizon and Motorola today revived the RAZR name and brought it to the Android 2.3.5, Gingerbread, powered device. Don’t let the name fool you, unlike its predecessor, this does not look razor thin but thankfully Motorola didn’t slice out features as this is packed with them. Putting an HD camera both in the front and rear, 8-megapixel on its backside, 1 GB or RAM, Bluetooth 4.0, 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot ready, and an 1780 mAh battery for longer life, the Droid RAZR is impressive. Lack luster is the storage with only 16 GB internal and expandable via the microSD to another 16 GB makes the fractured storage less desirable than that of the iPhone 4S internal one-stop storage.
Get the full details below for more information on this $299 device that Motorola hopes to challenge the iPhone 4S with this Christmas.
BASKING RIDGE, N.J., and LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. – Today, Motorola Mobility, Inc. (NYSE: MMI) and Verizon Wireless announced DROID RAZR™ by Motorola, the world’s thinnest 4G LTE smartphone. A true marvel of design, this smartphone packs strength and smarts into a stylish package offered exclusively from Verizon Wireless.
Measuring 7.1 mm thin, made with KEVLAR® fiber for strength and Corning® Gorilla® Glass for scratch resistance, the DROID RAZR is ready to face the elements. Speed limits are just an illusion with a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and Verizon Wireless 4G LTE. DROID RAZR customers can expect to rip through the Web with speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G.
“DROID RAZR by Motorola combines style, performance and the power of Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network into one innovative device,” said Marni Walden, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. “These are two iconic brands that separately symbolize the best technology available today. The combination will provide an unsurpassed wireless experience for customers.”
“DROID RAZR by Motorola is a testament to the innovation and design possibilities that stem from a strong partnership between Motorola Mobility and Verizon Wireless,” said Sanjay Jha, Chairman and CEO, Motorola Mobility. “We set out to design the best smartphone on the planet and delivered DROID RAZR which is thinner, smarter, stronger than any device on the market.”
Not only does DROID RAZR by Motorola deliver heart-pounding speed, but it has a mind-bending 4.3-inch hyper-vibrant display with more colors than most LCD HDTVs. The Super AMOLED™ Advanced display with qHD resolution dishes out beautiful images and smooth action so on-the-go movies and TV shows aren’t a blur, whether customers stream from Netflix™ or rent from Android Market™. It’s the first smartphone capable of streaming movies and TV shows through Netflix with up to HD resolution.
DROID RAZR customers can take advantage of the Super AMOLED Advanced display and 4G LTE speeds to stream videos with NFL Mobile, only from Verizon. Fans can stay up to date on news, schedules and scores from their favorite teams on the go. NFL Mobile is included at no additional charge for 4G LTE customers for the remainder of the 2011 season.
If cutting-edge visuals are its beauty, apps on DROID RAZR are its brains. Enter MotoCast™, the free Motorola app that lets you stream or download your music, pictures and more from your PC to your phone. My favorite electric vehicle manufacturer has teamed up with one of my favorite electronics company. Panasonic will supply Tesla Motors with automotive-grade lithium-ion battery cells to power the upcoming Tesla S sedan and future models. This agreement will help Tesla meet its 6,000 Tesla S ramp-up it received in reservations alone. Additionally, Panasonic has made a $30 million investment into Tesla.
I can’t wait to see one of these cars and hopefully own one someday. More deets below.
Palo Alto, Calif., October 11, 2011 – Panasonic Corporation and Tesla Motors finalized a supply agreement for automotive-grade lithium-ion battery cells. Panasonic is the world’s leading battery cell manufacturer and a diverse supplier to the global automotive industry. Panasonic’s automotive grade lithium-ion battery cells will be used in Tesla’s premium electric sedan, Model S.
The agreement supplies Tesla with Panasonic’s lithium-ion battery cells to build more than 80,000 vehicles over the next four years. It guarantees the availability of enough cells in 2012 to meet Tesla’s aggressive production ramp-up and fulfillment of more than 6,000 existing Model S reservations. This supply agreement helps ensure Tesla will meet its cost and margin targets for Model S.
This agreement builds upon a multi-year collaboration between Panasonic and Tesla to develop next-generation automotive-grade battery cells and accelerate the market expansion of electric vehicles. In 2009, Panasonic and Tesla initially entered into a supply agreement. In 2010, Panasonic invested $30 million in Tesla to deepen the partnership and foster the growth of the electric vehicle industry.
Panasonic supplies cells with the highest energy density and industry-leading performance using its nickel-type cathode technology. Panasonic and Tesla together have developed a next-generation battery cell based on this nickel chemistry and optimized specifically for electric vehicle quality and life. These new cells will combine with Tesla’s proven EV battery expertise gained from more than 15 million customer miles driven in Tesla Roadsters and thousands of hours of cell and battery testing to create the most capable electric vehicle ever produced, Model S.
“It is a powerful endorsement of our technology that Panasonic, the world’s leading battery cell manufacturer, has chosen to partner with Tesla to advance electric vehicle performance and value,” said Tesla Co-Founder and CEO Elon Musk. “Incorporating Panasonic’s next-generation cells into Model S batteries will ensure unrivaled range and performance. We are very grateful for our great partnership with Panasonic.”
“Panasonic will supply lithium ion cells for EVs that can achieve longer range with large energy density. It is our pleasure to start supplying the cells for Tesla’s Model S and promote sustainable mobility,” said Masato Ito, President, Energy Company of Panasonic Corporation.
Tesla is a supplier of batteries and powertrains to Toyota and Daimler. Tesla is a comprehensive electric vehicle powertrain component supplier to the electric vehicle industry.
