If you are ever wondering what this tech-gadget loving guy may be doing through the day, then check out my Twitter account. I’ll be using the site to also post some sites of interest and it will be a great place for you to get some “behind the scenes” stuff I may not get onto SvenOnTech. There are a lot of sites I go to in research for posts here but due to the time it takes to actually type the stuff out, a lot gets lost to the ether so to speak.

Beyond that, you’ll also get some of my witty commentary on just life. :) I promise, I’ll try to abstain from the gross, though I am a guy so sometimes I may stumble. So please accept my pre-emtive apology. :)
Oh, try to figure out what my account name, 7mary4, is about, too. I’d love to see if you can figure that out. (It’s not that hard to figure out with Google, folks. :) )

See you on Twitter…

Symantec Corp (Nasdaq: SYMC), makers of
Norton security software, today released the first volume of the Norton
Online Living Report (NOLR) revealing that, more than ever, adults and
children around the world are getting emotionally and socially connected
online - including dating, friendship and playing - as well as for
information and communication. The NOLR, undertaken by Harris
Interactive, revealed some startling statistics about how Internet-Age
technologies have affected families across the world.

Up to half of online adults worldwide and up to 40 per cent of online
children worldwide have made friends on line, with 72 per cent of
responding UK adults having translated at least one online friend to an
offline friend. In the UK, 43 per cent of online adults and 26 per cent
of children enjoy their online relationships as much or more than their
offline friendships. This indicates a major shift in how people relate
to one other and provides potential clues for the future of human
interaction.

Another common theme worldwide reveals that parents’ perception of what
their children are doing online does not reflect the reality of what
their children say they are doing. For example, one in five responding
children admit to conducting activities online that they know their
parents would not approve of with 24 per cent of UK online children
spending tenfold or more time online than their parents think they do.
The survey revealed that 72 per cent of responding parents in the UK are
concerned about their children’s activities online, with 25 per cent
having no idea about what their children are doing on the internet.

This can have shocking consequences: Five times as many children online
in the UK have been approached by a stranger online than their parents
believe. In UK, adults believe that four per cent of children have been
approached online by a stranger. The actual per cent reported by UK
online children is 20.

Goodbye, My Friend

Eric_Davis

It is with a heavy, heavy, heart that I announce the sad departure of a very true and dear friend, Eric Davis. He went to be with the Lord today at 11:20 am while hospitalized in Merced. Collapsing Friday at a job site from a lack of air, Eric simply could not recover from the ailment that has troubled him for years, most recently just before Christmas. He leaves behind a wife and six beautiful children, two of which the family adopted from Africa (he personally went to Africa to bring them home.) It was just this month that the kids officially became theirs.

Even though I have only known Eric for about a year, I regard him closer than a friend. He was my brother. He and his family was the first to truly take us in when we started attended our current church. Eric and I immediately bonded and how could we not? He was a geek within and was just excited about technology as I am. What struck me the most about Eric was just what an amazing servant he was. He happily helped where ever there was a need.

What I will most miss about Eric is his tender heart and smile. Seen here in the picture I used for his Caller-ID on my iPhone, this was typical Eric. Taken at the end of last summer at an impromptu BBQ he invited us to, I asked him for this shot and laughingly he said he didn’t want to but he smiled any way while I took it. This picture will forever be on my iPhone.

Please be praying for Eric’s family. This without a doubt is such a tragic loss that it will be very difficult to digest. They will need the soft and tender touch of Jesus through this difficult season.

Eric, with tears in my eyes…I say goodbye. I love you and will miss you. Until eternity, my friend, goodbye.

10 Rockets and Some Office Fun

When a certain writer of a certain web site was shown a certain tank by a certain mother at the age of seven, his reply was, “I want one!” Well, years later, this certain writer now finally can have his very own Multiple Launch Rocket System or MLRS as it is known around certain Pentagon hallways.

Vavolo has got an USB Missile Control Tank which allows you to plug in the remote control (RC) of the tank into your PCs USB port. Thus, it qualifies it as an instant business tool. Now that the RC is tucked away into your company provided computer, you can control the tank fully from your keyboard. No worry on batteries on the RC either, it’s sucking more free power from your company’s computer. (Hey, Facilities will thank you for not begging them for more AA batteries.) With full sound effects and a 20 foot distance for each of the 10 rockets, you’ll easily be able to take out your enemy, er, co-work at least two cubes down from you. Pure and highly productive work we think. Grab yours for only $80. Trust me, it’s way cheaper than the real deal!

How the Left Stole Christmas

Author: Sven Rafferty
Monday, December 18, 2006

T’was the month before Christmas
When all through our land,
Not a Christian was praying
Nor taking a stand.

Why the Politically Correct Police had taken away,
The reason for Christmas - no one could say.
The children were told by their schools not to sing,
About Shepherds and Wise Men and Angels and things.

It might hurt people’s feelings, the teachers would say
December 25th is just a “Holiday”.
Yet the shoppers were ready with cash, checks and credit
Pushing folks down to the floor just to get it!

CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-pod
Something was changing, something quite odd!
Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa
In hopes to sell books by Franken & Fonda.

As Targets were hanging their trees upside down
At Lowe’s the word Christmas - was no where to be found.
At K-Mart and Staples and Penny’s and Sears
You won’t hear the word Christmas; it won’t touch your ears.

Inclusive, sensitive, Di-ver-si-ty
Are words that were used to intimidate me.
Now Daschle, Now Darden, Now Sharpton, Wolf Blitzen
On Boxer, on Rather, on Kerry, on Klinton!

At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter
To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.
And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith
Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace.

The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded
The reason for the season, stopped before it started.
So as you celebrate “Winter Break” under your “Dream Tree”
Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.

Choose your words carefully, choose what you say
Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS, not Happy Holiday!

How Would Your Mac Vote Today?

Author: Sven Rafferty
Tuesday, November 7, 2006

So today’s the day. The last day we’ll hear all the campaign ads. The last day we’ll get a barrage of phone calls telling us to vote for this guy or that girl. The last day we have to weed out which sign among the hundred at the corner of the street is the one you’ll need to pay attention to on voting day. Today is the last day we hear the Dems say they’ll take back the House and the last day we’ll hear the GOP say they’ll keep the majority. Today’s it…for at least a year until the Presidential election.

So, for fun, how would your Mac vote, today? Would it be influenced by all the political blogs you have visited over the last month? Would it’s built-in voicemail software nudge it to one party over the other due to all the recorded campaign messages? Would it think different and vote against your conscience? Would Steve’s sphere pull it to the left? So for fun, how would your Mac vote today and tell us why it would vote the way it does in the comments.

My Mac? It’s a MacBook Pro. Republican, of course. It’s a Pro. :)

(PS: Don’t vote, don’t complain.)

Where’s Week Six, iTunes Store?

Author: Sven Rafferty
Tuesday, October 17, 2006

Hey, living in California is tough for a Steelers fan. Ya, it’s tougher than the season Pittsburgh is having right now. Any true Steelers fan will do nearly anything to see a game, or highlights, of his or her favorite team no matter how poorly their “I always were a helmet” quarterback is doing.

So what gives on iTunes, two days after the blow out against KC, on no highlights? I understand that the previous three weeks were a joke but come on, give a little here! We need to see those glorious 45 points being scored. At this point, I’m not even stressing the outrageous $2 fee. But man, keep lagging on me Apple and NFL, I may start looking for a torrent…

Supercharged in Park!

Author: Sven Rafferty
Thursday, July 27, 2006

SvenOnTech’s official pace car is one 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with good ‘ol Borla pipes and an U-Bend remover. Add the K&N drop-in and we’re told we just added about 50 ponies to our ride. We’re sure the dyno would really say 15, maybe 20, but it’s still a fast four door off the line and we love hearing the whine of the supercharger when we’re quickly running down, er, our next big story.

Today while filling up a Costco Gas station for the nice high price of $3.249 per gallon (got to use supreme for the supercharger), I noticed a bar on the console for the supercharger. Even though the engine was off and door open, Eaton was geared up (excuse the pun) and ready to go! hehehe.

Just a little something we had to share. It was also a good excuse to open a YouTube account, though we’re sure YouTube will be gone or chargin’ phat bux in a year.

Happy Independence Day

Author: Sven Rafferty
Tuesday, July 4, 2006

To all my fellow Americans, I bid you a Happy Independence Day!

For those not State-side, we hold this day with high regard. Well, some do. Most seem to just get drunk, do some BBQ’in, and watch fireworks at night and complain about how there wasn’t enough of those fuzzy red ones. Me? I’m proud to be a citizen of this grand land and very thankful to those that have given their lives for the freedom we celebrate today.

SvenOnTech would like to thank all those who have served in our armed forces and those serving today. Thank you!

Now go have a fine German beer with your good ‘ol American “house” burger. We’ll be having a US Flag cake for dessert. Mmm.

Welcome Jon to SvenOnTech

Author: Sven Rafferty
Sunday, July 2, 2006

I’d like you all to welcome Jon Eilers to SvenOnTech. Jon has found his way on SvenOnTech way back to the days of Svenrox. He loved to stop by and leave lots of comments. Now we’re spinning the tables on him and asking him to write for us. He (foolishly?) agreed to do so.

Jon is a graduate of the fine University of Pacific her in California. He’s comes with lots of art and media experience and will be lending his hand in the video realm for us. In fact, his first article, coming tomorrow, will be about the lies (my words) of tapeless video recorders. If you’re thinking of getting an DVD recorder for the 4th (State side), then you’ll want to read his article first. Don’t worry, we’ll give you plenty of buying time as it’ll be up first thing in the morning.

Okay, y’all be good to Jon and say hi to him once in a while in his articles.
