Lenovo today announced the industry’s first hybrid PC for consumers, the IdeaPad U1 hybrid notebook, featuring a groundbreaking detachable screen. The IdeaPad U1’s unique design is engineered to provide consumers with two PCs in one device – each with its own processor and operating system – that work together and independently as either a clamshell laptop or a multitouch slate tablet.

“The IdeaPad U1 hybrid notebook is a game-changing technology in the PC industry that lets user switch their PC experience within a single device to match their dynamic lifestyle,” said Liu Jun, senior vice president, Idea Product Group, Lenovo. “By fusing the functionality of a notebook with the slate tablet’s rich multitouch entertainment and mobile Internet experience, U1 provides consumers the freedom to choose the device they prefer for any activity.”

The IdeaPad U1’s fashionable scarlet red exterior has a footprint just smaller than a piece of notebook paper and is paired with an equally impressive 3.8 pound thin and light design. With its unique detach-and-converge design, users can easily remove the screen to instantly switch from clamshell mode into a multitouch slate tablet. When the IdeaPad U1 is in its traditional clamshell form, the system boasts an 11.6 inch HD LED screen and runs Windows 7. When the 1.6 pound, multitouch screen is removed, it becomes an independent slate tablet with a powerful ARM processor, running Lenovo’s customized Skylight operating system.

Two Brains are Better than One
Leveraging the benefits of both CPU, the two devices can synchronize to work as one with the ability to share battery power, 3G wireless, data and documents. In this way, the base laptop system can serve as a hub and docking station and the slate tablet as a mobile device. The two PCs have been engineered to work together and independently through Lenovo’s Hybrid Switch technology that enables seamless toggling between the two processors. For instance, users can surf the Web in laptop mode and then continue from the same point without interruption if they detach to tablet mode.

“Me Centric” User Interface Provides Instant Gratification for Today’s Consumers
Lenovo’s hybrid notebook also features a customized “Me” centric tablet interface for comfortable landscape and portrait viewing. Users can switch between a six-section display and a four section display. U1’s six-section screen display is designed to enhance the mobile internet experience by letting users easily multitouch access multiple Web-based applications at once such as email, calendars, RSS readers and social networking Web sites. The four-section screen display option is perfect as a media center on the PC such as photos, music, videos and to view/edit documents.

IdeaPad U1 Doubles Entertainment Fun
The IdeaPad U1’s laptop and tablet modes each support more than five hours of 3G Web browsing and 60 hours of 3G standby. In addition, the U1 comes with integrated video camera and two stereo speakers with integrated microphone with echo cancellation make this the ideal PC for users who need flexibility but do not want to compromise features or functionality.

Pricing and Availability
The Lenovo IdeaPad U1 hybrid notebook will be available June 1, 2010 with an estimated retail price of less than $1,000.1

10+LiveTV_TVShow1.jpg

So you’re still holding out for that Sling Player for the iPhone, huh? Well, good luck on that because I’m watching television broadcasts today, for free. Apple has finally authorized the release of Live TV, submitted to the Cupertino-based company before Macworld, and now I’m doing what Equinux was showing me back in the beginning of the year. I’m changing channels, viewing programs, and even recording them for later pleasure. All from my iPhone and all free of charge from the App Store. The missing Sling Player app will cost you, which Sling wouldn’t even confirm a price but told SvenOnTech, “about $30″ when it does finally see light. That’s worth the wait, right?

Live TV requires you pay only for the other end of things, the hardware, just like you do for the Sling box. But, Equinux’s offering is cheaper and fits into any Mac. The TubeStick turns your Mac into a true DVR and allows you to export to your iPhone, iPod, Apple TV, or to iMovie for edit and burning. Last I heard, Sling don’t do that.

Oh, if you wish to watch your recorded content, then you’ll want TubeToGo for your iPhone. Another free offering from Equinux.

So, you can wait for “that” player or fling (get the pun? :) on over to Equinux and get moving today. Now for the rest of Namaste America.

sipgate Inc. today announces the immediate availability of a free application for the iPhone, which, for the first time allows consumers to natively use any VoIP service which uses the industry standard SIP. Consumers can now use their iPhones to make and receive VoIP calls from their devices over a Wi-Fi Internet connection using a wide variety of VoIP providers. The VoIP-enabling software is available from sipgate’s website
www.sipgate.com.

With the sipgate service, users can dial any number without using minutes from a wireless plan. This is particularly useful when calling to or from other countries, as call costs can be as high as $3 per minute. However, when using a VoIP service, costs can be kept as low as $0.01 per minute. sipgate is giving new users 111 free minutes for domestic calls for users to test out VoIP usage on the device*.

Another benefit of sipgate is that consumers can use any domestic or international number provided by their VoIP service on their iPhone. This means that they can make and receive calls from different domestic and international numbers, all on a single device.

Thilo Salmon, CEO of sipgate commented: “We love VoIP and we love the iPhone so we are giving people like us who always wanted VoIP on the iPhone the ability to use any SIP-based VoIP service they want. We are thrilled that Apple is opening up the iPhone and we look forward to taking part in future application development.”

Salmon continued: “As a company we strive to make useful services accessible to everyone. There will be more innovation for businesses and consumers coming from sipgate this year, so keep your eyes open for more news.”

The iPhone has been doing an impressive job at hitting Steve Jobs self-made goal of 10 million in its first year with making the halfway point in December of 2007. While attempting to fix many of Microsoft’s ills on the mobile platform, it’s still no iPhone. But still, a nice phone in itself and now Alltel users can have one.

XV6800.jpg

Having both the XV6600, and the XV6700, I probably would have upgraded to this phone if I were still on Verizon. But since I have the far superior iPhone, I won’t. :) But in all seriousness, if you had to buy a Windows Mobile phone, I’d say this is a good bet for you. Still mind you, the system will need soft-reseting at least twice a day, you’ll have to buy a big ‘ol fat battery since the standard one won’t get you past lunch. But again, when you can’t (or won’t) get an iPhone, I’d say this is a good way to slap a smartphone onto your hip. Get yours from Verizon Wireless for $400 without contract or $300 with a two year commitment.
