nova media unveils iHub Basic, syncs Macs, iPhones, iPads and iPod touch wirelesslyBerlin based nova media today unveiled iHub Basic for Mac OS X. iHub Basic syncs contacts and calendars automatically and wirelessly between Macs, iPhones, iPads and iPod touch in any local network. The software installs on a Mac and shares selected calendars, contacts and address book groups. Other Macs and iOS devices on the same network can access and edit any shared data. iHub Basic does not require any additional client software as it uses the open standards CalDAV and CardDAV which are supported by default by Mac OS X and iOS.

“Thanks to iHub Basic, there is no need to store sensitive on any far-away cloud service.”, states Jan Fuellemann, spokesperson of nova media. “In addition, the user does not have to use a cable and run iTunes just to add an appointment in the calendar or to change an address. And of course, there is no need to buy any expensive server solution to sync contacts and calendars any more.”

iHub Basic runs as an invisible server application in the background and does not require users to be logged on the Mac where it is installed. Other Macs can sync their data via WiFi and/or Ethernet. iPhones, iPads and iPod touch require a WiFi connection to be synchronised.

iHub Basic can use the integrated MoHub® technology by nova media to set up an ad-hoc WiFi network with just a few clicks. This way, all devices can be sychronised even if no network is available at all.

iHub Basic saves contacts and calendars from the last 14 days automatically and allows a quick restore of this data in case an unwanted change has been synchronised.

Pricing and Availability:
iHub Basic is available today for Euro 29.95 including VAT (US-$ 29.95 plus VAT for residents in the US and Canada) at nova media’s website http://www.novamedia.de. iHub Basic requires Mac OS X 10.6 or higher to install. Synchronisation of calendars requires Mac OS X 10.5.x, iOS 3.x on the clients. Synchronisation of contacts requires Mac OS X 10.6.x, iOS 4.x on the clients.

Pakedge Is Awarded the First-Ever Patent for an In-Ceiling Wireless Access Point

Pakedge Device & Software today announced it has been awarded a U.S. patent on its in-ceiling wireless access point design. Pakedge is the first company ever to be awarded a patent on an in-ceiling wireless access point (WAP), a device that expands the wireless connectivity of a home network, custom-installation audio/video system, security system or enterprise-class network.

Mounting a wireless access point in a ceiling can provide significant benefits. Wireless range can be increased and transmission/reception reliability improved by mounting a wireless access point in a ceiling, because of reduced interference from building and construction materials. In addition, an in-ceiling wireless access point offers increased installation options and convenience.

Pakedge U.S. patent number 7763797 covers the intellectual property relating to the mounting technology necessary to install wireless access points in a ceiling. It also describes the benefits of greater Wi-Fi range and better connection stability provided by an antenna array that is placed at an elevated location. Pakedge was the first company to develop an in-ceiling access point and subsequent patent in 2003.

A Pakedge in-ceiling WAP can be mounted in a variety of ways as either a retrofit or in new construction, in a ceiling as well as in a drywall installation. Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) is used to eliminate the need for a dedicated power supply at the WAP location. As part of the patent design, a supplied wing bracket facilitates installation, and the cover of the Pakedge in-ceiling access point provides a clean, finished appearance. As an industry leader in developing wireless technology, Pakedge has used this intellectual property to develop its newest in-ceiling access point designs, which will make their debut this month.

Victor Pak, President and CEO of Pakedge, noted: “We are honored to receive the industry’s first-ever U.S. patent for an in-ceiling wireless access point. The patent reflects Pakedge’s commitment to offering innovative, problem-solving products that make life easier for custom installers and system integrators.”

Verizon Droid X Buyer

College student Katie Masucci lined up at her local Verizon store in Frisco, Texas at 9:45 pm last night to wait a couple of hours for the doors to open and be the first to purchase the Motorola Droid X. It is reported that hundreds of people lined up across the nation to await the opening of stores to be the first to nab Motorola’s new Android 2.1-based phone, the Droid X. Many stores participated in a mid-night sale getting the new smartphone in customers hands even earlier. While not the over-night lines of past iPhone sales, this is one of the first such lining up for a competing phone to Apple’s phone that reset the standards.

Motorola brings, “An HD camcorder, 8 megapixel camera, 3G Mobile HotSpot capabilities, and enterprise features and outstanding call quality. DROID X also comes with loads of memory – 8 gigabyte (GB) onboard and a 16GB memory card. For customers seeking the ultimate in storage, the new 32GB SanDisk® microSDHC™ card allows customers to expand DROID X’s memory to 40GB. Verizon Wireless is the only retailer that offers customers the 32GB SanDisk microSDHC card,” according to Verizon’s press release. The large 4.3-inch high-resolution screen is outstanding – we have been playing with the Droid X for a week – and allows for 720p video via it’s HDMI port on the bottom left side. Also new to the experience is streaming movies from BlockBuster On Demand, ala Netflix for the iPhone, presented by V Cast Video.

The Motorola Droid X is available online and in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores tomorrow for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement. Per Verizon, “Customers will receive the mail-in rebate in the form of a debit card; upon receipt, customers may use the card as cash anywhere debit cards are accepted. DROID X customers will need to subscribe to a Verizon Wireless Nationwide Talk plan (beginning at $39.99 monthly access) and an Email and Web for Smartphone plan (beginning at $29.99 for unlimited monthly access). Customers can add the optional 3G Mobile HotSpot service to their DROID X smartphones for $20 per month. The 32GB SanDisk microSDHC card is available tomorrow for $99.99 when purchased along with the new DROID X or for $149.99 when purchased separately. In addition, current Verizon Wireless customers who have contracts ending by Dec. 31, 2010, can upgrade to DROID X without penalty.”

Look for our review on the Droid X in the coming weeks but as a teaser, we’ll just say this much: you don’t need to wait for the rumored Verizon iPhone.
