Welcome to MyPalmLife!

After years of reporting on Palm hardware and software, we regret to inform our readers that we have decided to end this site. PalmSource and Palm, Inc no longer seem to be supporting this once wonderful platform and thus there is no real sense to continue this site. From time to time, there will be Palm news and that will be found on our sister site, SvenOnTech, in addition to other incredible industry stories and commentaries! Be sure to point your RSS readers and browsers to this site to keep up to date.

We thank you for visiting our site over the years and will continue to keep this shell archived here for those who wish to search previous posts of ours. It is our hope to soon have MyPalmLife's articles integrated completely in SvenOnTech soon. But, until that happens, continue to enjoy MPL as is!

Where’s all the Good Freeware?

So I’m looking for a good tip calculator this morning and find in my search that they all want money for their product. Lots of it. I scratch my head in disbelief and search harder. Nope, nothing for free.

Folks, why for a platform (Palm OS) that’s been around years before the PocketPC is there not a vast sea of freeware out there? I used an awesome tip calculator for my PocketPC that was free and a very similar one I found for the Palm is freakin’ $5! Come on, it’s a simple calculator! I don’t get it.

I don’t know, I may be looking in the wrong place, but I use to find TONS of freeware for the PPC and I find very little for the Palm. It’s a crying shame for a platform that brags about how much more software it has and how it’s community is better then the PPC one. To tell you the truth, I’ve not been impressed with what I see available for the Palm when compared to the PocketPC. Prove me wrong and leave a comment! :)

Sony to use Organic LED displays by Spring 2004

This should be interesting - sony are so often first to market with new tech and seem to be on course to do it again :-)

OLED displays promise far lower power consumption combined with fast response times. Check this article at PalmInfoCentre

This article from CNN will give you more background reading on OLEDs generally.

Palm beats Pocket PC (again)!

PC World magazine (not to be confused with the UK computer ’specialist’ retailer) has conducted a large survey of Palm and Pocket PC users – and guess what – people prefer to use Palm OS devices.

It seems Palm users had less cause to contact Tech Support (just as well!) and were more satisfied with the user friendliness of Palm OS devices.

According to a spokesperson for the reports author most issues ‘out-of-the-box’ are software related – and even more specifically synchronisation.

This is one area where I think Palm is actually moving backwards however. When I got my first Pilot Pro this was the one thing that worked perfectly. Where Palm has gone wrong with the T3 is to ship Outlook Conduits that just don’t quite work!

Palm have finally (and correctly) realised that their Desktop software is no match for Outlook and so shipped it with conduits to allow direct syncing between the Palm and Outlook. On paper a good idea as no one wants to spend £60 on third party syncing software if you can get it for free right. But Palm has now had two goes at this and it’s still not quite right!

However even the third party developers are struggling to get updates software out as Palm are not being totally upfront is supplying the necessary info on how the improved Contacts, Calendar at To Do apps are configured. If Palm cannot get it right its self at least they should give the third parties the info they need to do the job for them!

See IntelliSync and Pocket Mirror for info on the third party options

You can discuss this in our forums - here

Movie Trailers

I had been completely under whelmed by the playback quality of Kinoma Player on my T3 – until I found this site – with several movie trailers available for download.

These are very large files - up to 16 MB so take a while even with broadband! To be honest I just got these as a proof of the technology. I don’t intend to leave these files on the SD card for too long.

Worth the download if you have a T3 (and broadband)

Poorly Christmas at John’s Home :-(

I could not have timed it better had I tried – this site goes live on Christmas day and I get struck down with the flu :-(

I managed to get up ok on the morning to see Matthew (2 yrs and 9 months) and Becky open their pressies but by about 4pm I was ‘whacked’ and went to bed. Today is the first time I’ve managed to get out of bed since then!

Consequently tonight is the first time I have seen the site in its ‘live’ state.

I’m pleased to see that all is well and Rick has broken his ‘duck’ – I need to see where he got that IR controlled BMW from – and operated via his T3 – a classic pda geek thing to do!

XMAS Downunder

I’m sure glad Santa came a little early this year and installed our new airconditioner. Yesterday (Christmas Day for me) saw temperatures at my house rise to 37 deg celcius outside. Inside though it was a much more comfortable 24 deg. Can you guess where I spent most of my time ;-)

Santa finally bought me my dream present (well almost). I’ve been telling my wife for years that I want to a buy a BMW so she arranged for Santa to bring one for me. The only downside is that it’s a model. This model however contains and infra-red remote control. The controller is integrated into a watch which you strap to your arm and then use to dive the car around the kitchen floor or wherever… The watch is functional but looks a little too “geeky” fo me, besides its not waterproof. No problems, I’ve got Novii Remote installed on the Palm. Within a few minutes, Novii has learned all the commands and I can now play with my new toy in true Palm style.

This car is sooo cool it even has a built in alarm. Turn the car off from the remote, hit the alarm button and if anyone tries to “steal” your wheels, then off goes the alarm with the lights blinking on and off just like the real thing. It even resets itself after a few moments and waits for the next unsuspecting thief to come along.

Hope you got some cool toys as well.

No Time to Blog Today!

I’m sorry but I’ve no time to blog today - I’ve got custody of one of my christmas presents (just for this afternoon, before it’s sent to Santa for official delivery the day after tomorrow)

If you’re wondering what could be so important - take a look here!

Normal service will resume asap :-)

Remotely Run Your Mac or PC from Your Palm

I’ve been using RemoteAdmin for my Windows desktops and servers for years ever since it’s first been released. It’s proven to be an invaluable tool that I couldn’t live without. I’ve written the developers begging for a PocketPC version and Palm and both got “no” for a reply. But I don’t think it matters now now that Astroflower Software has made something similar. It’s called AstoView and it does the very thing RemoteAdmin does, it allows you to log into your desktop, Mac or Windows, and fully control it from your Palm. As if you were sitting in front of it! It supports both low resolution and high. So, this puppy has some potential!

Palm to settle SUDS Class Action

Palm are in court today to (try to) settle the class action against them for SUDS (Sudden USB Death Syndrome) - which effected m50* pdas.

Having said that the court is likely to accept that Palm did all it could to rectify the problem by way of its 3 point remedy solution:

“(a) Claim Relief 1: Palm will exchange for any Settlement Class Member who so requests pursuant to the terms of the claim form a replacement (new or refurbished) USB cradle for the Settlement Class Member’s original cradle. Such exchange will be at Palm’s expense, including shipping.

(b) Claim Relief 2: For any Settlement Class Member who follows the steps set forth under Claim Relief 1, and who is not satisfied because his or its Palm Handheld continues to cease to perform the HotSync operation as a result of ESD, to be validated by Palm, and who requests pursuant to the terms of the claim form, Palm will provide and ship to such Settlement Class Member, at Palm’s own expense, a preprogrammed (new or refurbished) SD card (including instructions) to reset the Palm Handheld.

© Claim Relief 3 : For any Settlement Class Member who follows the steps set forth under Claim Relief 1 and Claim Relief 2 above, and who is not satisfied because his or its Palm Handheld continues to cease to perform the HotSync® operation as a result of ESD, to be validated by Palm, and who requests pursuant to the terms of the claim form, Palm will provide and ship to such Settlement Class Member, at Palm’s own expense, a replacement (new or refurbished) Palm Handheld viewer of the same model type. To qualify for this relief, the Settlement Class Member must exchange and return the Palm Handheld viewer and SD card as to which the Settlement Class Member was not satisfied. “

I suffered from SUDS an (eventually) got a replacement cradle - although it was of inferior quality compared to the one that came with my m505.

I’m now interested to see what the fallout is from the T|T3 SD card frying escapade - surely some money will have to change hands on this one?
