It never fails in the computer world, the minute you plop down cold cash for an item a new and better version comes out before you even make it to your car from the store of purchase. Case in point, the new Western Digital Passport 250 GB external hard drive. I picked up, count them, two of the 160 GB version just two weeks ago. Not even with an inside source working a the WD do I get advanced notice of the higher density release! Shesh. But no worries, I’m happy with my 320 GB in my back pack. I’m cool. I won’t worry. It’s all good.

This drive is USB bus powered so it doesn’t require an external power source. It comes with WD Sync synchronization and encryption software, Google software, and requires no software for installation. Just plug it into a Mac or PC and you’re up and running. MSRP for this guy is $199.

Hey, if anyone wants to get the 320 GB Passport, let me know and I’ll go buy this newly announced 250 GB one. I’m sure just a few weeks after, the 320 GB will be out.

The first shipments of Polaroid Media Backup – Photo Edition are now available in North America.

Polaroid Media Backup – Photo Edition enables consumers to back up photos from their personal computer by simply plugging the device into a USB port. It immediately searches the computer for all digital images and copies them over to the device without having to install or configure any software.

The ClickFree technology developed my Storage Appliance (www.goclickfree.com) assures the user of a simple and easy process, and eliminates the frustration of backup, making it ideal for consumers with little computer knowledge.

Research shows half of all consumers don’t back up their data at all because they are afraid of the technology. The balance of consumers who back up infrequently rely mostly on CDs to store copies of their files, including photos, which is an inconvenient and time-consuming.

Polaroid Media Backup – Photo Edition contains a 2.5” hard drive that will hold up to 40,000 photos and is available in two colors, Black model# CGA02540 and White CGA02541. In addition to backing up photos, the device has several other convenient features, including the ability to home print and burn a CD from the device. It can also create wallpaper from your photos with a touch of a button.

There’s nothing more annoying than having a cell phone that works great were you work but gets near zero signal at home. Or vice verse. My brother in-law (and SvenOnTech reviewer) gets about a bar in his home which leads to many dropped calls. Sometimes I can’t even get a hold of him because the signal is not strong enough to receive calls. Fortunately for him, he has a Motorola E815 and he can unscrew his antenna and stick in a 10db booster!

The booster connects in two parts. First the 4″ whip sticks onto a metal surface through its “rare earth” magnet. The 10′ cable from it attaches to a connector that fits into the E815s antenna hole. Screw it in and you just increased your signal strength by 10 times! Even though it’s using rare materials, this will only cost you $30.

If you don’t have an E815, no worries, mate. Most Motorola phones (and other CDMA phones for that matter) have removable antennas that will allow for such an after market whip to connect to your phone. Check out Cell Power if it has one for your phone and then stop worrying about dropped calls (or data connections.)

I’ve been a huge fan of the Western Digital (WD) Passport external hard drive since the first ones hit the street. When I received my, then largest capacity, 80 GB, I was elated to use it. Since then, WD has added another 40 GB to welcome a third model to the line with a 120 GB amount of space. Also just added is it’s new WD Sync software that comes with every new drive.

WD Sync allows you to, “securely access, edit and share Microsoft Word® documents and Excel® spreadsheets, MP3 files, e-mails, attachments and more from anywhere – in a cybercafé, on a friend’s laptop or in a colleague’s office.” Using 128-bit encryption along with password protection, your data — e-mail, documents, pictures, all of it — stays safe and guarded. Since the data is on the external hard drive itself, you don’t have to worry about others looking at your files after you leave their computer.

If you’re a current WD Passport owner, like me, no worries on missing out. You too can download the software and start using it immediately. Visit the WD Sync web site and come armed with your serial number and after a few questions answered, you’ll be all set to securely sync your files on your external hard drive as well.

If you haven’t checked out the line of WD Passport drives, you should. Ranging in capacities of 60, 80, and 120 GB for the Passport Portable USB and 6 GB of storage on its, “ultra-thin WD Passport Pocket Drives,” featuring, “a unique flip-out, rotating USB 2.0 connector that allows use in tight spaces and is thin enough that two drives can be used at the same time in the tightly spaced USB ports found on notebook computers,” you won’t go wrong with any of them.
