I love my Nikon D70 and use it to death. Now that I’ve really just begun to learn how to use the M on my dial, I could never go back to a point-and-shoot. But at a thousand dollars for just the body, this DSLR is for the serious photographier. What’s someone to do who wants a good camera but doesn’t have that kind of money in their budget? Get the new D40, of course! :)

The D40 is equiped with a 6.1 megapixel sensor that saves its pictures onto an SD, of either RAW or JPEG format, and will show your shots on a 2.5-inch display. Nikon will gladly give you a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens as well. Not bad for $600, indeed!

Take a look at Nikon’s site for more information.

Welcome Jon to SvenOnTech

I’d like you all to welcome Jon Eilers to SvenOnTech. Jon has found his way on SvenOnTech way back to the days of Svenrox. He loved to stop by and leave lots of comments. Now we’re spinning the tables on him and asking him to write for us. He (foolishly?) agreed to do so.

Jon is a graduate of the fine University of Pacific her in California. He’s comes with lots of art and media experience and will be lending his hand in the video realm for us. In fact, his first article, coming tomorrow, will be about the lies (my words) of tapeless video recorders. If you’re thinking of getting an DVD recorder for the 4th (State side), then you’ll want to read his article first. Don’t worry, we’ll give you plenty of buying time as it’ll be up first thing in the morning.

Okay, y’all be good to Jon and say hi to him once in a while in his articles.

If you just are bummed that the NBA season is over and there’s no more good NBA news, then do I have something for you. The NBA saved the best for last…a new ball! Ya, that’s right, the NBA as officially announced it’s spanking new ball and don’t worry, it’s still orange. New sleek curvy lines, though.

Ya, I know this isn’t tech but sometimes we like to let our hair hang down and just blow in the hot Central California breeze. Know what I mean?

(BTW, we didn’t want to be a spoiler and just show it here on our site, hence the logo. Go to the link and read why the NBA felt it needed to update it’s orange Tang.)

What does one do with their 800MHz PowerBook of yesteryear when they have a snazzy and cutting-edge MacBook Pro? Leave it on its on Bookendz dock and let it sit. At least that’s what I did for the last three months, until a couple of days ago.

From time to time, we like hooking up the Mac to the TV to either watch iTMS purchased videos or MPEG2 files from other sources. Since the MacBook Pros arrival, we’ve been using it for these demanding times. However, the other night, I had to use my MBP and I couldn’t free it up. What was I going to do? Get my old Dell Inspiron out? Heck, no! I thought about it for a minute and then with excitement in my voice said, “Dah, I’ll use my TiBook!”

I booted it up and downloaded all the updates. Rebooted and then installed MediaCentral. Once installed, I hooked it up to the TV and like that chef likes to say, Bam!, we were in business! Sure, we had no spiffy white remote, but that was alright, we got by. The remote can be “fixed” with a third-party solution, which SvenOnTech is going to post on in the upcoming days.

So there I was, using my MacBook Pro while my good friend the PowerBook played our show for us. No issues, no problems. It’s good to be using my beloved TiBook once again. :)

Man, my wife thought I was nuts when I had our son’s web site up and running (with his own domain name) within three hours of his birth, but this professor from MIT takes the cake! Slapping up, “11 overhead, omni-directional fisheye video cameras and 14 ceiling-mounted microphones,” and a, “5-terabyte disk cache in the basement stores data temporarily until it is physically carted back to the Media Lab for analysis,” I’d be scared to think what Deb Roy’s wife thinks. Now sure, it’s all in the name of science, namely how one acquires language, but still, kinda a bit over board on your son’s birth, don’t you think? :)
