Other World Computing (OWC), located in Woodstock, Illinois, has a vision to be part of the solution and not the rhetoric with CEO Larry O’Connor at the helm of this grand scheme. All one has to do is ask O’Connor about the work OWC has done and he immediately brightens up with excitement like a kid on Christmas morning. You can feel O’Connor’s zeal for this stuff as he rapidly fires off statistic after statistic giving one much to digest. This is a guy that just doesn’t say going green is better, he gives you reason why it is better. OWCs hallmark in the “why” is a a towering wind turbine just behind the building. O’Connor’s primary reason for installing the wind turbine was Return on Investment (ROI). At a total of $1.25 million 100% self-funded install cost, OWC should recover total cost within 10 to 14 years. That number could become smaller as energy costs climb noting that the Chicago market for energy has risen 24.3% since 1999.
The beauty of the wind turbine is how well it works for so little. As I walked from my rented white Cadillac CTS4 to OWCs entrance, I noticed only a mild breeze on my face which was more than enough to turn the blades on the turbine to the left of me. In fact, it will power the entire OWC campus at just between 10 – 15 MPH. The blades will turn to make adjustments for faster wind and can handle up to 150 MPH! If things get too extreme, the blades then turn in to become “flat” and thus preventing any spin. The blade house can rotate 360 degrees allowing the turbine to find the best wind to spin in.
At 131 feet tall, the wind turbine has become somewhat of a landmark for the town of Woodstock. O’Connor told me while touring the facility that school busses have come loaded up with children to just drive by to see it. In fact, the demand to know more about the turbine has caused OWC to set up an information booth just up the road from its entrance at its coffee shop.
The Vestas V39-500 kW wind turbine is projected to churn an estimated 1,250,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of power per year. That’s nearly twice as much as OWC needs. Other World Computing isn’t just an office with cubes but is the headquarters that includes a call center, warehouse and shipping, and a datacenter that runs macsales.com and OWC.net / FasterMac.net. That’s a lot of power folks!
OWC didn’t just put in a “windmill” and call it green. From your first step out of your vehicle to the sidewalk, you’ll immediately notice something different. Instead of paving the parking lot with oil like every other place you’ve ever driven your car on, OWCs lot looks a bit like a cobble stoned streets of Old Europe. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice gaps between each stone purposely placed to allow for water drainage. These holes allow rain water to quickly place itself back into the environment without the need to install a sewage system. Grant Dahlke, OWCs Marketing, PR, and Social Media Manager, recounted when the fire department had tested the drain-off that no matter how much water was pumped into the lot, water just would not collect long enough to even create a large puddle. “It just drained,” Dahlke said with a smile. Viewing the video shows how a small bottle of water is no match for this incredible system. Rain water is not the only H20 that OWC is working with. All the water in the building is filtered and treated internally removing the need to ship in bottle water for the employees.
Now, not to get gross or be accused of TMI here, but even the fluids that leave OWC are treated with a green conscious. The toilets in the mens bathroom do not require flushing which saves nearly 40,000 gallons from being flushed. The Sloan Waterfree urinal is just one more example of how OWC has taken this green thing to the next level. (Take a look at the toilet and the sign above it.)
To heat and cool the facility, OWC goes 200 plus feet underground behind its building with pipes fed with coolant. This Geo-thermal setup brings the fluid to between 47 and 54 degrees all year long saving on natural gas for heating and electricity for air conditioning. This makes OWC a true zero emissions facility which has captured the attention of Illinois governor to NBC News. But most importantly, it also has garnered OWC Platinum LEED Certification. LEED, short for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, started in 1998, with 14,000 LEED projects awarded OWC Platinum level which is one less than 500 to have such an award hanging on its lobby wall.
OWC is well known for its amazing hardware and accessories and has been a leader in Mac accessories for over 20 years and now it is leading the way, once again, into a new realm for technology companies. Hopefully not just tech houses see the value in what O’Connor and his company has succeeded at doing and join OWC into the future of clean, reliable, and self-sufficient energy.
More than half of Americans leave their mobile device wall chargers plugged in 24/7, and 35 percent are unaware that their charger is still using electricity even if their cell phone is not attached, according to a study by Ventev Innovations, a manufacturer of wireless accessories that transform ordinary products into extraordinary innovations. To combat that loss of energy, also known as Vampire Power draw, as well as deliver a value-added charger, Ventev today launched the EcoCHARGE wall charger – the most advanced, energy-efficient wall charger on the market.
“The EcoCHARGE is a game changer in the mobile device charger market – both on the energy conservation and innovation fronts,” said Jeff Lime, vice president of Ventev. “In addition to being Energy Star certified and exceeding the 5-Star efficiency rating, the EcoCHARGE charges two devices at one time, is packed with user friendly features like our power strip friendly design, and gives our customers the confidence to leave it plugged in by eliminating the Vampire Power draw concern when no device is connected, or when the device is fully charged.”
Ventev Innovations is a division of TESSCO Technologies (NASDAQ: TESS), a value-added provider of the knowledge, products, and supply chain solutions needed to design, build, run, maintain, and use wireless systems. Ventev Innovations products embody exceptional design and functionality, creative performance and precision engineering. The Ventev Innovations division launched its first Ventev branded products in July 2008 and has continued its focus on new innovations and expanding its product line.
In addition to the EcoCHARGE, several Ventev innovative wireless accessory products will be on display at CTIA (TESSCO booth #1710), including:
Ø PowerCELL, a rechargeable power supply that lets users recharge USB-friendly devices while on-the-go. Its compact design offers easy storage and mobility, and it’s ready when needed, even after months of storage. LED indicator lights show just how much charge is remaining.
Ø AlumiSNAP, a new case construction following luxury auto industry trends, artfully combining the use of metal and plastic in a stylish and functional design. AlumiSNAP is a snap-on case made of real brushed-aluminum and protective polycarbonate, which offers colorful material contrast to the basic crystal case.
At CTIA, Ventev’s products will also be on display at Pepcom’s Mobile Focus on Tuesday, March 23rd at the Paris hotel from 7-10 p.m.
The EcoCHARGE is available now from Ventev in Mini USB and Micro USB for $29.99. The iPhone/iPod version of the EcoCHARGE will be available in April 2010.
Other World Computing (OWC(r)) http://www.macsales.com, a leading zero emissions PC and Mac(r) technology company, announced today that it has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership program for its leadership role in becoming an on-site producer of more than 100% of OWC’s power needs through clean, green wind power. The EPA Green Power Partnership program is a voluntary program that provides recognition to organizations demonstrating environmental leadership by using clean renewable power, either by producing power, as OWC does, or by purchasing green credits.
First 100% On-Site Wind Powered U.S. Technology Manufacturer
OWC became the first 100% on-site wind powered U.S. technology manufacturer on October 19, 2009, when it activated its Vestas V39-500kW wind turbine. The turbine is projected to generate an estimated 1,250,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year, nearly double the current energy requirements of all OWC operations, including its internet operations datacenter for OWC.net and FasterMac.net. Excess energy produced by the OWC wind turbine is sold back to the local power provider, thus making OWC a net supplier of sustainable energy to the McHenry County, IL region in addition to being a provider of award winning technology products and services to over one million Mac, PC, and iPod users around the world.
“The EPA commends Other World Computing for their commitment to protecting the environment by using green power,” said Susan Wickwire, Chief of the Energy Supply and Industry Branch at U.S. EPA. “By generating power with an on-site wind turbine, Other World Computing is reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, supporting clean energy technologies, and contributing to a clean energy future.”
Clean, Renewable Wind Power Part of Green Corporate Philosophy
The 100% self-funded on-site wind turbine is one component of the overall green initiatives that OWC employed in designing and building its corporate headquarters. The OWC building and campus, completed in 2008, are in the final approval stages for the highest LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program rating of Platinum. LEED is a voluntary program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council to provide building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations, and maintenance solutions.
Good for the Environment & the Bottom Line
The cost to install a wind turbine of OWC’s caliber is typically $1.25 million with a Return On Investment (ROI) of 100% within 10-14 years based upon a 25% front-end investment and current energy costs. The actual ROI recovery period can be reduced significantly as energy costs increase.
“OWC has always planned for the future, and going to 100 percent wind energy delivers both conservational as well as energy cost benefits,” said Larry O’Connor, CEO, Other World Computing. “We’re very pleased that our efforts have been recognized by the EPA as exhibiting environmental leadership,” said O’Connor.

Powertraveller, the UK manufacturer of power and charging solutions for electronic devices, has opened the cage and unleashed two new beasts – the powergorilla, a portable charger for laptops and its ‘mate’, the solargorilla, a solar panel capable of powering a laptop.
Available separately but designed to work together if required, these two devices are capable of handling the power needs of laptop users worldwide.
• Weighing in at 631g and measuring 2200 mm x 130 mm x 15 mm, a fully charged powergorilla will give laptop users between 2-6 hours of extra power and over 20 hours on various other devices including mobiles, iPods and hand-held game consoles.
• The powergorilla is capable of powering and charging laptops ranging from 16V, 19V or 24V – just select which voltage is required and the LCD screen will indicate which setting has been chosen.
• Included with the powergorilla are 15 interchangeable tips for the most popular laptop brands, as well as tips for the leading makes of mobile phones and other hand-held digital gadgets.
• The powergorilla offers the option to ‘daisy-chain’ – whilst the powergorilla is charging your laptop you can charge the powergorilla from the mains power supply or from the solargorilla. Alternatively, the powergorilla can power a laptop and recharge other digital devices at the same time.
• At the heart of the powergorilla beats a high energy density Lithium Polymer rechargeable battery (capacity: 21000mAh ). The powergorilla can be charged either via the mains using the included worldwide A/C mains charger (to fully charge, allow 5-6 hours) or direct from the sun via the solargorilla (6 hours in strong sunlight will charge a powergorilla by up to a half).
• The solargorilla tips the scales at just 700g, measures 264 mm x 200 mm x 19 mm. Tough rubberised casing and water resistant, the solargorilla has a 20V power socket out and standard 5V USB socket. The solargorilla works via two PV (photovoltaic) solar panels which generate electric current when exposed to light – the greater the UV intensity, the greater the performance.
• To charge the powergorilla or to power a laptop, just open the two panels of the solargorilla, expose to direct sunlight and connect to either your laptop directly or to the powergorilla. The green LED on the solargorilla indicates the strength of charge.

Santa Rosa electric car pioneer Zap has come to the iPhones rescue, of sorts. While it already has excellent battery life for a smartphone, some are finding a need to get more from it and Zap brings three times that need with the iZap.
“The iZAP battery was a life-saver during my business trip to China last week,” said iPhone owner Steve Schneider, Chief Executive Officer for ZAP. “Frankly, if an iPod runs out of power, losing your music and video is not as critical to your business trip as the iPhone. You lose your cell phone access, text messages, Internet and email access, time zone clock, business notes, scheduling software, driving maps, calculator and all the other news and information for which the iPhone was designed.”
I guess if you’re the CEO, you can find this nifty new battery; however, if you search Zap’s site, good luck finding this new beast. There is an iZAP for the iPod, though, this is probably not what you want to zap your iPhone with.
