Verizon, that very same company that said no to Apple three years ago to its unknown iPhone, has changed course with Google’s open source operating system for mobile devices, Android. Maybe Verizon has learned from its Apple mistake and now will bring something unique to its strip-mall stores across the nation. Chief Executive Officer Lowell McAdam says it now makes sense to get behind Android. “We’re planning on using Android,” McAdam tells BusinessWeek. “Android is an enabler of what we do.”
Ya, I bet it does make sense, Lowell!
If you haven’t seen much on Android, take a look at Google’s Code site for videos and such about it. The visual global time (spin the globe with your finger ala iPhone!) and SkyPop (locate your other Android using friends in real-time) alone are worth considering dumping your iPhone! Oh ya, did I mention it’ll be 3G on the get-go?
Verizon Wireless, the leading wireless company with the nation’s most reliable wireless voice and data network, and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced the availability of the MOTO™ Z6c world edition, an eye-catching slider sensation that holiday shoppers can now get exclusively from Verizon Wireless. The stunningly slim and sophisticated Z6c adds global connectivity, comes with advanced mobile phone technology and multimedia features, and is available today online at www.verizonwireless.com and through business sales. The MOTO Z6c will be available in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores on Dec. 12.
For customers traveling within the GSM network coverage area outside of the U.S. provided by Verizon Wireless’ global roaming partners, the Z6c gives customers on-the-go connectivity to the people that matter most to them. Verizon Wireless’ high-speed CDMA network supports the Z6c while it’s in the U.S. and in more than 22 other countries that use CDMA technology.
The Z6c features fast and intuitive multimedia capabilities, and its espresso casing with a high-gloss front and soft-touch back makes it stylish for all jet setters. For video and music enthusiasts, the Z6c is equipped with the ability to access V CAST Video, Verizon Wireless’ multimedia service with news, sports and entertainment video clips, 3D games and more; and V CAST Music, which offers access to more than 2.4 million songs that can be purchased and downloaded over-the-air, directly from the phone, while in the V CAST coverage area. In addition, to fully-enhance the music experience, the Z6c supports stereo Bluetooth® wireless technology and can be paired with a compatible Bluetooth-enabled headset like the MOTOROKR™ S9. The Z6c also features a 2.0 megapixel camera, 2-inch QVGA display, and supports up to 4 GB of optional removable memory – making the Z6c an essential carry-on for the budding photographer capturing and sharing photos and videos of international journeys.
Global Service
Staying in touch has never been so convenient or so affordable. To use the MOTO Z6c outside of the U.S., customers should dial *611 (800-922-0204) from their Verizon Wireless phones to add global service to their calling plans before they leave home. International charges are $1.29 or $2.49 per minute for calls in more than 180 countries, while international text messages are only 25 cents per message.
Having both the XV6600, and the XV6700, I probably would have upgraded to this phone if I were still on Verizon. But since I have the far superior iPhone, I won’t.
But in all seriousness, if you had to buy a Windows Mobile phone, I’d say this is a good bet for you. Still mind you, the system will need soft-reseting at least twice a day, you’ll have to buy a big ‘ol fat battery since the standard one won’t get you past lunch. But again, when you can’t (or won’t) get an iPhone, I’d say this is a good way to slap a smartphone onto your hip. Get yours from Verizon Wireless for $400 without contract or $300 with a two year commitment.

Verizon Wireless and Led Zeppelin today announced they have partnered to provide mobile customers with an entirely new way to access the legendary rock band’s music. Verizon Wireless will be the first mobile music service provider for ring tones, ringback tones, alert tones, and wallpapers, as well as full-song over-the-air downloads, offering customers infinite ways to personalize their phones and express themselves. Full-song downloads will be available on November 13, 2007. The band’s catalog includes such landmark songs as “Rock and Roll,” “Kashmir,” “Communication Breakdown,” and “Stairway to Heaven.”
“Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock band ever and their music transcends generations,” said David Dorn, senior vice president of e-commerce for Rhino Entertainment. “We are excited to be working with a forward thinking partner like Verizon Wireless to offer the group’s legendary catalog of recordings across the entire spectrum of mobile products to longtime fans, as well as new, young fans discovering the band for the first time.”
“Verizon Wireless is proud to be the exclusive over-the-air retailer of digital downloads from Led Zeppelin,” said Ed Ruth, director of digital music at Verizon Wireless. “We are thrilled to deliver this anxiously-awaited catalog to existing Led Zeppelin fans, while also helping a whole new generation to discover this classic rock for the very first time. All of this on the one device people never leave home without – their mobile phones.”
In 2004, Verizon Wireless became the first national wireless company to offer ringback tones; since then, the company has introduced unique artist relationships with classic rock legends and pop icons, highlighting cutting-edge music services that encourage music discovery, such as V CAST Song ID. Since 2006, Verizon Wireless has built a massive full-song mobile music store with more than 2.1 million songs from mainstream and independent artists that customers can download over-the-air with V CAST Music, or to a PC and sideload to their phones. Today the company delivers more than 30,000 ring tones and 30,000 ringback tones that customers use to personalize their phones.
Led Zeppelin was formed in London 1968 and was the highest grossing touring band of the seventies. Their concerts, often three hours in length, were legendary. With over 300 million albums sold worldwide, Led Zeppelin’s boundary-shattering music remains timeless and their enormous energy undiminished. More than two decades after their last concert together, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones, will reunite for a one-off concert on November 26, 2007 in honor or Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun at London’s O2 Arena.
Announced earlier this year, on November 13, Atlantic Records/Rhino Entertainment will release Mothership, a two-CD collection that spans the band’s illustrious 12-year career. And, on November 20, a newly remixed and remastered The Song Remains The Same soundtrack of the concert film from the band’s three-night stint at Madison Square Garden in July 1973 will include six songs that were not on the original release.
For more information on how to download and rock Led Zeppelin on V CAST Music-enabled phones, fans can text ZEP to 8901. For more information on V CAST Music from Verizon Wireless, visit www.verizonwireless.com/music .
