As college students hunker down for the fall semester, Verizon Wireless now offers Skype mobile™ on many 3G Multimedia phones, making it easy to affordably stay connected with friends and family. The LG enV® TOUCH, LG Chocolate Touch™ and Samsung Reality™ join Verizon Wireless’ strong lineup of 3G Smartphones that already feature Skype mobile.
Skype mobile helps students on a budget stay in touch, whether they’re starting at a new school or returning as upperclassmen. Skype mobile also offers a simple, convenient and cost-effective way for parents to keep up with their kids who venture overseas for a term abroad, eliminating the need to set a time to be at a computer to receive the Skype call from junior.
· Bon Voyage – If students need help preparing for their time abroad before they go, they can use Skype mobile to talk with professors about how to balance studies and travel. Skype mobile also offers language support in Spanish, Korean and simple Chinese, helping students keep in touch with new international friends after they return home.
· Close Quarters – Living in a dorm room with a stranger can be nerve-racking, but students can use Skype mobile to get to know future roommates, making the transition to dorm life easier. Whether they want to plan the dorm room décor or bond over favorite movies, Skype mobile lets them chat for hours and become fast friends.
· Dark or White? – Calculus class? Check. Biochemistry test? Aced it. How to separate dark and white loads? For some students laundry is stressful. When a terrible stain hits a favorite shirt, students can use Skype mobile to call home for laundry expertise until the spot is only a memory.
· Don’t Let Summer Love Fade Away – Maintaining a relationship while apart is tough, but with an “always on” capability, Skype mobile means students never have to miss a call while away from their computers.
· B.F.F. – Making friends at a new school is important, but staying in touch with friends from home is too. Best friends can send and receive unlimited instant messages with other Skype users to stay close no matter how far away from each other they may be.
· Wisdom of Age – Students living away from home for the first time may need some survival tips from older siblings. Knowledge from a big brother or sister is easy with unlimited Skype-to-Skype voice calls via Skype mobile.
Skype-to-Skype calls and chats are unlimited when initiated with Skype mobile from a Verizon Wireless phone with a data plan to any of the hundreds of millions of Skype users anywhere in the world. The calls run on the United States’ largest and most reliable wireless voice network, providing outstanding call quality and allowing the app to work with traditional voice products, including Bluetooth® headsets. Skype mobile calls made to domestic landline and wireless numbers use minutes from customers’ voice plans. Skype mobile calls to international numbers do not use customers’ voice plans and are paid for by Skype Credit and charged at Skype’s low international rates.
Customers with Android smartphones can download the highly rated app from the Verizon Channel in Android Market™, and customers with select BlackBerry® smartphones can download it from www.skype.com/vzw through their smartphones’ browser. For 3G Multimedia phones, customers can download the app from Media Center/Get It Now® or the online media store at www.verizonwireless.com/mp3. Customers can also text “SKYPE” to 2255 to get a message with the link to download Skype mobile.

“When we announced DROID X last month, we reaffirmed our commitment to continue to bring unique Android experiences to the Verizon Wireless network,” said Jeffrey Dietel, vice president – wireless device, marketing and development for Verizon Wireless. “The DROID by Motorola was our first Android device, so it is important for us to include the successor to that phone in our portfolio. DROID 2 is not only a continuation of our commitment to Android but offers customers the features and form-factor they crave on the Verizon Wireless network.”
“With the new DROID 2, we’ve taken a big leap forward from the original DROID,” said Bill Ogle, chief marketing officer of Motorola Mobile Devices and Home Business. “We listened to consumers and are providing an even more robust experience built on Android 2.2 that includes a new keyboard, increased processing power, Adobe Flash Player 10.1 and 3G Mobile HotSpot capabilities to send, access and share information even quicker than before.”
DROID 2’s super-slim design helps customers e-mail, text and tweet with ease. DROID 2 offers a redesigned symmetrical keyboard with raised keys for more responsive typing to push out notes and status updates. Speech-to-text input and the virtual multi-touch keyboard allow for quick messaging; or customers can also use Swype for even easier text input. In addition, full push corporate e-mail delivers enhanced features such as remote wipe and password enforcement so that information remains secure.
DROID 2 packs power and speed. Customers can enjoy the freedom of wireless with the 3G Mobile HotSpot and the ability to connect up to five compatible Wi-Fi® devices, and watch content on the full multi-touch 3.7-inch brilliant display, or share content captured on the 5-megapixel camera with enhanced functionality and DVD-quality video capture with DLNA connectivity to share on compatible devices.
Customers can also download favorite apps from Android Market™, which has more than 70,000 applications, and store them on 8 GB of preloaded on-board memory and the 8 GB microSD™ card, which can be upgraded to a 32 GB SD card for a total cargo capacity of 40 GB. Popular apps available on DROID 2 include NFL Mobile (downloadable), Skype mobile™ and BLOCKBUSTER On Demand® presented by V CAST Video. Customers can even manage their wireless accounts or their contacts from their phones with My Verizon and with Backup AssistantSM.
“It’s great to see amazing new smartphones like the DROID 2 come pre-installed with Flash Player 10.1,” said David Wadhwani, senior vice president and general manager, Creative and Interactive Solution Business Unit at Adobe. “With the completely redesigned and hardware accelerated Flash Player 10.1, DROID 2 users will be able to experience the full Web on the go.”
Adobe Flash Player 10.1 lets mobile users experience millions of websites the way they were meant to be seen – with rich Internet applications (RIAs), content inside the browser, including games, animations, data presentations and visualizations, e-commerce, music, video, audio and more.

College student Katie Masucci lined up at her local Verizon store in Frisco, Texas at 9:45 pm last night to wait a couple of hours for the doors to open and be the first to purchase the Motorola Droid X. It is reported that hundreds of people lined up across the nation to await the opening of stores to be the first to nab Motorola’s new Android 2.1-based phone, the Droid X. Many stores participated in a mid-night sale getting the new smartphone in customers hands even earlier. While not the over-night lines of past iPhone sales, this is one of the first such lining up for a competing phone to Apple’s phone that reset the standards.
Motorola brings, “An HD camcorder, 8 megapixel camera, 3G Mobile HotSpot capabilities, and enterprise features and outstanding call quality. DROID X also comes with loads of memory – 8 gigabyte (GB) onboard and a 16GB memory card. For customers seeking the ultimate in storage, the new 32GB SanDisk® microSDHC™ card allows customers to expand DROID X’s memory to 40GB. Verizon Wireless is the only retailer that offers customers the 32GB SanDisk microSDHC card,” according to Verizon’s press release. The large 4.3-inch high-resolution screen is outstanding – we have been playing with the Droid X for a week – and allows for 720p video via it’s HDMI port on the bottom left side. Also new to the experience is streaming movies from BlockBuster On Demand, ala Netflix for the iPhone, presented by V Cast Video.
The Motorola Droid X is available online and in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores tomorrow for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement. Per Verizon, “Customers will receive the mail-in rebate in the form of a debit card; upon receipt, customers may use the card as cash anywhere debit cards are accepted. DROID X customers will need to subscribe to a Verizon Wireless Nationwide Talk plan (beginning at $39.99 monthly access) and an Email and Web for Smartphone plan (beginning at $29.99 for unlimited monthly access). Customers can add the optional 3G Mobile HotSpot service to their DROID X smartphones for $20 per month. The 32GB SanDisk microSDHC card is available tomorrow for $99.99 when purchased along with the new DROID X or for $149.99 when purchased separately. In addition, current Verizon Wireless customers who have contracts ending by Dec. 31, 2010, can upgrade to DROID X without penalty.”
Look for our review on the Droid X in the coming weeks but as a teaser, we’ll just say this much: you don’t need to wait for the rumored Verizon iPhone.

“Nine months ago, we made a commitment to our customers to bring the openness of Android to the Verizon Wireless network,” said John Stratton, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. “Since then, we have introduced the top-selling Android phone in the marketplace today – the DROID by Motorola. DROID X takes that commitment to another level with exclusive content, faster processing speeds, and, of course, the reliability of our network.”
Sanjay Jha, co-chief executive officer of Motorola and chief executive officer of Motorola Mobile Devices and Home business added, “Motorola designed DROID X to push the extreme limits of Android innovation, and enable you to do even more with your mobile device. We are breaking down barriers so that you can experience the Web the way it was meant to be and create, share and view content like never before, either in your hand or in your home. Enterprise users will also find DROID X appealing with features including push e-mail and live widgets for e-mail and calendar updates.”

“It has been an exciting time for Android momentum and global consumer adoption since the announcement of DROID by Motorola nine months ago,” said Andy Rubin, vice president of engineering for Google. “There are 160,000 new Android-powered devices activated daily and Android Market has grown to over 65,000 applications. Plus later this summer, Verizon Wireless and Motorola will update all the DROID by Motorola phones to the latest 2.2 software. For customers, this means great new features and improved browser performance. For developers, this will provide new tools such as cloud-to-device messaging and enhanced enterprise functionality.”
“We are excited about full Flash support coming to the DROID X and other devices from Motorola,” said Shantanu Narayen, president and chief executive officer of Adobe. “Flash Player 10.1, which is one of Adobe’s most anticipated releases ever, has been redesigned from the ground up to deliver the kind of highly engaging experiences that consumers now expect from their mobile devices.”
Once updated to Android 2.2, business customers will find DROID X offers the features that turn the device into a workhorse with support for both Exchange and Gmail™ for business.
